The City of Edmonton and police are warning drivers to avoid certain roads after another wave of flooding hit the city Monday, thanks to heavy rain from daytime storms.

Meanwhile, the city, in a separate post, said 126 Avenue at 66 Street is closed due to the rain. 129 Avenue between 58 Street and Fort Road is also closed.

The city is advising to avoid parking beneath underpasses and to be cautious because some traffic signals may be out.

Crews are working to address issues caused by the heavy rain, the city said.

Flooding and water issues in other parts of the city have also been reported, including in Belgravia, Alces, and inside Edmonton City Centre mall.

The storms came in two waves of heavy rain on Monday. The deluge double feature also hit the city just a few days after torrential rain caused flooding and significant damage across the city on Saturday night.

The storm resulted in temporary road closures, localized flooding, transit service delays, downed trees and power outages.

The city said earlier Monday that partial or full closures were still in place after the weekend rain. There is still a closure at 130 Avenue and 107 Street, and also the 178 Street off-ramp to Whitemud Drive is reduced to one lane.

Along with roads, some city facilities are closed until further notice due to the rain, including the Telus World of Science, Indigenous Peoples Experiences Pavilion at Fort Edmonton Park, the aquatics area at the Grand Trunk Fitness and Leisure Centre and the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre.

The city said Edmonton has seen unprecedented rain this season, with more than 511 millimetres in June and July, the highest volume recorded since 1953.

The typical amount in summer is between 70 and 80 millimetres.

When the forecast predicts heavy rain, the city said it works with Epcor to monitor conditions and prepare for action.
