A new province-wide poll authorized by Vote to Stay showed a strong majority of Albertans in every area of the province support Alberta staying in Canada.

The online survey of 2,000 eligible Alberta voters is tied for the largest publicly released poll on Alberta’s constitutional future, and is the only publicly released poll to provide detailed regional results for Edmonton, Calgary as well as northern, southern and central Alberta.

“The results are encouraging. The fact that it has the regional breakdowns that clearly identify that Albertans want to stay in Canada — winning convincingly, including the rural areas, that’s heartening and really happy about the way those numbers are shaping up,” said Vote to Stay founder Monte Solberg, in an interview with Postmedia on Monday morning.

Results of the online poll, broken down by region, show that in Edmonton 80 per cent want to stay, while 17 per cent are for leaving. In Calgary, 78 per cent want to stay, while 18 per cent would leave. In the central Alberta region, 66 per cent want to stay, while 29 per cent want to leave. In the northern region of the province, 66 per cent want to stay, while 26 per cent want to leave.

The poll was conducted from June 4-12 using Leger, Lucid and Innovative’s Canada 20/20 research panels. Results were weighted to reflect Alberta’s population by age, education, gender, race, region and past voting history.

“We anticipated that the numbers would be around this, but the big surprise is the support in rural areas of Alberta. Central Alberta is a real hotbed for separatism,” said Solberg.

“Just seeing big numbers across the province for support and staying in Canada, I think really reflects the spirit of collaboration, and it’s having an impact and putting the lie to the idea that Canada is fundamentally broken and can’t be repaired again.”

Solberg said he fully expects more polls to be conducted leading up to the Oct. 19 referendum, and his group will be studying those polls carefully.

And while the results of this poll are promising, Solberg encourages Albertans to not get complacent. He wants all Albertans who are in favour of staying in Canada and against separatism to take ownership of this referendum and ensure they vote.

“A poll doesn’t win you a referendum, polls are won by the side that shows up to vote, and we know how motivated separatists are, (over) 200,000 of them signed a petition. We can count on them coming out in strong numbers,” said Solberg.

“It will be imperative that we as committed Canadians come out and vote on Oct. 19, and pull their friends along with them, because we’ve seen past referendums where turnout can be quite low, and there’s a real danger that separatists could do extraordinarily well against the federal side. Make sure to get out there and vote for Canada to remain whole and Alberta to stay in Confederation.”
