An investigation is underway, police said, after a woman was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver shortly after she stepped out of a rideshare vehicle in Philly’s Elmwood Park section early Monday.
According to police, the incident happened at about 3:30 a.m. shortly after a 29-year-old woman was dropped off by an Uber driver in the area of the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue.
As the woman — identified by police as Talyia Bernice Nesmith of Philadelphia — exited the vehicle and walked into the roadway to cross Elmwood Avenue, officials said, she was struck by a speeding vehicle headed eastbound. NBC10 obtained surveillance video showing the crash.

The impact, officials said, threw Nesmith into a parked 2019 Nissan Altima.
Following the crash, Nesmith was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead at about 4:05 a.m., officials said.
The hit-and-run vehicle struck a parked blue 2022 Honda Accord after hitting Nesmith, police said. The driver then sped away in the vehicle without stopping following the deadly crash, according to investigators.
According to a police representative who spoke to NBC10’s Lili Zheng, the driver behind the wheel had the vehicle going so fast at the time the vehicle struck Nesmith, that investigators did not initially have a detailed description of it.
Initially, they only knew it was a black vehicle.
However, as of about 10:45 a.m., police believe the vehicle involved may have been a 2020 – 2023 Dodge Charger Hellcat or Scat Pack Wide Body.
Police shared stock images to show an example of the vehicle believed to be involved.
The hit-and-run vehicle may have damage to the passenger side and possible windshield damage, officials said.
According to investigators, the vehicle was last seen traveling eastbound on Elmwood Avenue.
Investigators also said several businesses in the area had surveillance cameras and they were working to review footage for more information.
An investigation into this incident is ongoing.
Victim’s mother speaks out
Lakisha Smith, Nesmith’s mother, spoke with NBC10 about the crash.
“I love my daughter so much and I would go to the end of the earth for her,” Smith said. “And I don’t know what to do. I’m going to miss her. And my heart is literally broken right now.”
Smith told NBC10 her daughter enjoyed helping the elderly and working with children with disabilities.
“If she loved you, she loved you with her whole heart,” Smith said. “She was so completely loyal to you if she loved you.”
Smith said Nesmith didn’t live in the area where the crash occurred but was on her way to visit her friends.
“I just don’t understand how someone felt like it was OK to hit my child and keep going,” Smith said. “So I just beg you, please, please God asks me to forgive you and I forgive you but I ask you to please turn yourself in.”
