After reading that many of the city’s downtown restaurants are closing or experiencing operational difficulties, are our civic leaders getting the message? Residents wish to support these establishments but many obstacles are faced. City transportation is one issue.

To ride the local bus or LRT is a safety issue which deters ridership. If residents prefer to drive to downtown restaurants, there are construction and parking concerns. The cost of parking and the use of QR codes (which often befuddle seniors unfamiliar with recent technology) discourage this action.

My thoughts are with those chefs who are passionate about and want to ply their skill and those who have invested heavily in the restaurant business who now deal with lack of clientele. Edmonton is a car city and drivers usually don’t have an issue driving a few kilometres to enjoy a dining experience where there is ample parking, room for an outdoor patio, and limited obstacles to get there.

Dog park also hard to get toArticle content
Infill isn’t the only problem city residents face. Even four-legged friends now find they can’t access their favourite small dog park in the Calder/Grand Trunk area. Construction and drainage issues have forced the closure of road access to the parking area. Dogs and their owners with mobility and other handicap issues now have a long walk on a muddy road to access the park.

Saying the city has gone to the dogs would be a disservice to our canine companions.
