Science can be fun — just take a couple of strawberries, smash them, and with a little soap and salt, watch what happens: a room full of students eager to see the results.
“We do our homework, and we do fun stuff like experiments,” said fifth-grader Jose Perez.
His classmate, Genesis Guity, had something to add: “Science is fun. It is not boring. They might tell you it’s boring, but it is not boring.”
While STEM education is at the center of their mission, Dibia Dream is changing students’ lives far beyond academics.
“I first started coming here because my mom was late to pick me up, and all the other programs were full,” Perez said.
Third-grader Ariana Sanchez added, “Sometimes my parents feel like they don’t want to help me. Here, they get to help me.”
Their teacher, Fatner Bleisz, shared that many students don’t have access to computers or the internet at home.
“Most of the kids are living here. They are from low-income families. They have nobody at home to help them with their homework,” Bleisz said.
But the support goes even further.
“Sometimes my mom has no food. They have food,” Sanchez said.
The after-school program ensures students have meals and the support they need to keep learning, especially when home isn’t always the easiest place to return to.
“One student told me his father was killed. He has to walk home… Mom, Dad, nobody is there. A neighbor takes care of him,” Bleisz said. “We are like their mom and their dad. Without us, I don’t know how they would be able to make it.”
This program’s mission is fueled by passion, and by grants like the one provided by NBC6 and Telemundo 51, which awarded Dibia Dream nearly $25,000. Bleisz emphasized that this support is instrumental, ensuring students have the tools they need to learn while still having fun.
Dibia Academy, the after-school program, is already operating in six additional schools:

Frank C. Martin K-8 Center
