It’s often said that sex sells, and a Richmond Hill arts group has found a creative way to grab the attention of younger people.

The Hill Potters Guild has spent decades teaching ceramics and bringing people together through pottery. Like many arts groups, though, they’ve struggled to get younger generations interested in the craft.

Their answer? Launch an OnlyFans account.

Working with Toronto’s Blackjet agency, the Guild launched “Ceramics Are Sexy,” a tongue-in-cheek campaign and OnlyFans channel inspired by the famous pottery scene in Ghost. The campaign highlights pottery as a hands-on, immersive, and sensual activity, drawing playful comparisons to intimacy.

Cue: me enthusiastically handing over my credit card information so I can watch a very sexy man make a pot while a sultry voice encourages me to “grip the base” and to “add moisture slowly. Just enough to keep your piece lubricated.”

Beneath the cheeky innuendo, there’s a deeper message. Pottery isn’t just about playing with clay. It’s also about nurturing the same qualities that help relationships thrive.

“Pottery does require patience, vulnerability and, very definitely, accepting imperfection,” says Kathy Verbeek-Chawrun of the Hill Potters Guild.

She believes that learning to work with clay mirrors learning to connect with another person. “Clay has a mind of its own. It has a memory. If you do something to the clay, then try to make it do something different, it will remember and often return to its original state.” She adds, “When you’re making pottery, you need to be gentle but firm, calm, quiet and focused. To me, that’s similar to when you first meet or connect with people.”

Science says that the parallels don’t end there. There’s research that links pottery to reduced stress levels, increased mindfulness, improved focus, emotional wellbeing, and a stronger sense of connection and accomplishment — all factors that support healthy, satisfying relationships.

Hands-on activities like working with clay feel sensual because they invite touch and tactile exploration. Dr. Jess O’Reilly, relationship expert and sexologist, explains, “Working with clay invites experimentation, creativity and self-expression without a single “right” outcome, offering a lens into pleasure and communication that can carry over into intimate relationships.”

O’Reilly says that a creative hobby like pottery can also create space for lovers to connect outside of the mundanity of managing a family, household and logistics. “Learning a new skill requires flexibility, patience and the willingness to embrace mistakes and imperfections; these capacities, of course, also serve as well as partners, friends and lovers,” she says.

Additionally, the element of novelty — for example, a date night pottery class — is associated with sustained and renewed desire in long-term relationships. “This doesn’t mean the activity itself is inherently erotic, but new experiences can disrupt routine and invite us to see ourselves and one another with fresh eyes,” says O’Reilly.

Pottery is also a great way to get us away from our screens. “Pottery requires sustained attention, which has become rare and can be novel, challenging and exciting,” says O’Reilly. Not unlike intimacy, “You can’t rush the wheel or scroll while moulding clay, so your attention becomes narrowed to the present experience of pressure, movement and responsiveness,” she says.

In a world where we’re constantly glued to our phones and increasingly encouraged to outsource everything—even parts of our intimate relationships—to AI, analog hobbies like pottery encourage us to do the opposite. They get us out of our heads and into our bodies and ask us to slow down, stay present and create.

“You can’t get the feeling of building something with your own hands and making something functional or beautiful from a phone or Netflix. It is an amazing feeling,” says Verbeek-Chawrun.

Whether you’re looking for love or trying to keep the spark alive in a long-term relationship, pottery reminds us that the best connections, much like the best pots, aren’t rushed. They take patience, practice, and a willingness to keep showing up.

Like relationships, creating a piece at the potter’s wheel, “The feeling is one of pride, challenge, happiness, and sometimes frustration,” says Verbeek-Chawrun. “But you always leave thinking, ‘One more try and I’ll get it.”
