Concrete ranks second among the most widely used materials on the planet and is regarded as highly versatile for climate-resistant infrastructure. However, the main ingredient of concrete is Portland cement, which is made by heating limestone and clay to about 1400°C, and this energy-intensive process now accounts for roughly 7–8% of global CO₂ emissions. Rapid urbanization and growing cement-related CO₂ emissions are driving the search for more sustainable and fire-resistant building materials.
