At least four tornadoes touched down in the Chicago suburbs during the severe storms that rolled across the region on Monday, National Weather Service survey crews said on Tuesday.

As of the end of their work on Tuesday, survey crews confirmed the following tornadoes touched down during the life-threatening storms on Monday:

• An EF-1 tornado in Lansing
• An EF-0 tornado in Glen Ellyn
• An EF-1 tornado that impacted Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, Harvey, and Homewood
• An EF-0 tornado that impacted western and northwest Orland Park

The tornado that touched down in Lansing had peak winds around 110 mph and lifted just east of the state line near Munster, Indiana, according to NWS. Winds in the tornado that struck Glen Ellyn peaked near 80 mph.

The tornado that impacted Country Club Hills, Hazel Crest, Harvey, and Homewood appeared to move northeast from Hazel Crest toward Harvey, that then did a loop around US-6 before heading southeast toward Homewood, NWS Said.

"Given the complexity of this track, we are still finalizing specific details," NWS said.

Crews also confirmed straight line winds with gusts over 70 mph hit Carol Stream and Downers Grove in DuPage County.

The four twisters bring the preliminary tornado count up to 59 for the Chicago area this year, according to NWS. That puts 2026 at the second highest count on record, just ahead of 58 in 2023 and behind 63 in 2024.

More tornadoes could still be confirmed as survey teams are continuing to do assessments of "some of the hardest hit areas," according to NWS.

By luck and with the help of others, some people survived life-threatening moments when severe storms ripped across the Chicago area on Monday. Natalie Martinez reports.

NWS said earlier on Tuesday that Monday's severe thunderstorms resulted in "several probable tornado paths" along with "significant" straight line wind damage, large hail and flash flooding.

Parts of DuPage, Cook and Will counties in Illinois, as well as in Lake and Porter counties in Indiana, were all under tornado warnings on Monday amid the severe weather outbreak, with strong rotation detected within multiple severe weather cells, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.

The intense stormy weather didn't provide much of a break on Monday from downpours and flooding to trees toppled over onto homes, cars, and in the middle of roads. Natalie Martinez reports.

The storms also cut power for nearly 400,000 ComEd customers, with households in DuPage and Cook counties being hit hardest by the outages and more than 140,000 still without power as of Tuesday afternoon.
