It was only recently, after moving to a new city, that I considered giving myself a makeover, a new hairstyle. My first question was simple: to dye or not to dye the silver strands beginning to show at the sides. I had been parting my hair carefully to hide them. If I coloured it, I could experiment more freely, I thought. When that felt uncertain, I turned to Instagram for inspiration. Instead, I found something else: women who carried their greys gracefully. They reminded me of a woman I had once noticed at a literary event. She stood out. Draped in a handloom sari, her posture composed, her presence assured, what caught my eye was her hair — silver, deliberate, and unapologetically visible. Not hidden, not dyed, not subdued. Styled. We often hear the phrase “ageing gracefully”. But what does it mean to be gracefully grey?

And more importantly, who gets to claim that grace? Across literary festivals, academic spaces, and professional corridors, a certain kind of woman is beginning to appear who is well-dressed, articulate, accomplished and grey-haired by choice. Not the accidental grey of neglect, but the cultivated grey of decision. The silver is not left unattended. It is either curled or straightened, well groomed and worn like a statement. Such women are not a common sight. We rarely encounter such women in crowded public transport or among the working class. The freedom to “go grey” seems to belong to a particular social space. She is the woman who has already “arrived”, whose voice is heard, whose presence is secured. To call it comfort would be too simple. There is nothing casual about this choice. The same woman who embraces her grey invests in her skin, her attire, her bearing.

Groomed like a prized possession, like a silver feather, it distinguishes rather than diminishes. This raises a question: is this about authenticity, or about authority? But this phenomenon is not limited to women. Consider the growing visibility of early greying among men. What might once have been seen as ageing is now styled into desirability. The “salt and pepper” look has become aspirational especially after cultural moments like Mankatha, where Ajith Kumar’s grey hair became iconic. Among men, greying early is rarely a disadvantage. On the contrary, a well-built man with streaks of grey often signals maturity and authority. For women, grey has historically meant the opposite — decline, invisibility, the need to conceal.

When women now choose to be “gracefully grey”, they are not simply accepting age; they are renegotiating its meaning. It is not rooted in pleasing, but in commanding attention. The gaze shifts from being desired to being regarded. And yet, this renegotiation is not entirely free of structure. It is easier to “age gracefully” when one has the social and cultural capital to support it. The grey hair becomes credible when it is accompanied by articulation, achievement, and aesthetic care. What appears as authenticity may, in fact, be carefully constructed. From the glamour world to public life — figures like Arundhati Roy, Neha Dhupia, Sameera Reddy, and Nafisa Ali, to name a few, exemplify this shift. Their grey or streaked hair is not incidental; it functions as a visual marker of authority and self-possession. In a culture that teaches women to resist ageing and men to grow into it, the politics of grey hair reveal an uneven landscape. To be grey is not the same for everyone. But for those who can claim it, silver is no longer surrender. It is style, strategy, and sometimes, power. That leaves me with the question: have “I” arrived?
