It’s 7:52 a.m. Your 4-year-old has dressed herself, which is a win. She’s chosen a pink tutu and a rainbow-striped T-shirt. Then you see that it is stained with strawberry juice close to the collar.
So you scramble to find another top, throwing the T-shirt into the pile that needs mending. The problem is you keep procrastinating on these repairs—since sewing or ironing on patches takes time—and by the time you get around to it, most of the clothes don’t fit your child anymore. Ultimately, the whole pile goes in the trash, because you can’t resell clothes with stains or tears in them.
But imagine a different reality: What if you could peel a sticker off a sheet, press it onto the shirt, and send your child out the door in it?

That’s the product Prue Linehan has spent three years developing. Her Brooklyn-based startup, New New Patch, makes printed fabric patches that adhere to clothing with no sewing, ironing, or 15-minute tumble drying. Once you stick one onto the garment, it will stay on wash after wash. A sheet of 12 stickers costs $20, and they’re available through the brand’s website, as well as independent kids’ stores in New York.
“Over the last couple of decades, the innovation in apparel has been to make replacing them frictionless,” Linehan says. “But what if we could make it more convenient to patch the garment than to replace it?”

We used to know how to fix our clothes
For most of human history, clothing was one of the most expensive things a household owned. In 1901, the average American family spent 14% of its household budget on apparel, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Since they were so valuable, garments were repaired, handed down, and up-cycled. Most people had no choice but to learn how to mend.
During the Industrial Revolution, apparel manufacturing began to happen at scale, lowering the price of clothes. Then, over the last 50 years, thanks to globalization and the fast fashion movement, companies found ways to make clothes so cheap they were basically disposable. By 2002, the share of household spending on apparel had dropped to 4.2%, and it is likely even less now. These days, a T-shirt made in Bangladesh from polyester is so cheap—sometimes as low as $4—that it doesn’t make economic sense to repair it. Many parents’ time is too valuable to mend their children’s clothes.

However, this has horrific consequences for the planet. The EPA estimates that Americans generate around 17 million tons of textile waste a year, of which about 11.3 million tons ends up in landfill. Globally, the figure is even starker: The Ellen MacArthur Foundation estimates that a garbage truck of clothing is getting dumped or burned every second. Only about 15% of discarded textiles are recycled or reused. Hopefully this will change as recycling technologies like Circ gain ground. But for now, the environmental math is brutal.

The patch hasn’t changed since the Civil War
Patching is an ancient craft. Humans have been cutting fabric and covering holes for thousands of years.
Along the way, there have been some innovations. In 1863, the Swiss inventor Isaak Groebli built an embroidery machine that could produce embroidered designs at scale. This meant, for the first time, a patch could carry a design, such as a logo. This led to a boom in patches, from military insignia to scouting badges to band logos on punk vests.
More recently, as people have lost the skill of sewing, there have been patches made with adhesives on one side that are activated by either ironing them on or putting them in a hot dryer. While the amount of time and effort to apply them is relatively minimal, many parents still don’t think it is worth their time or effort, especially when children’s clothes are so cheap to replace.
Linehan saw all of this play out with her two young children, whose clothes were often stained. But it occurred to her that if fixing a stain was so seamless that it was actually more convenient than replacing a garment—or even making your child change outfits—parents might actually do it. “I knew that any solution needed to be peel and stick, require no sewing, no ironing, and also last in the wash,” she says. “That was my North Star.”

45 glues and a lot of trips to the laundromat
Linehan knew that technology around glues had advanced a lot in recent years. But as she started conversations with adhesive manufacturers in the United States, several told her that what she was trying to do was impossible. “Many hung up on me,” she says. “One suggested I just use duct tape.”
The problem was that no adhesives on the market had been designed to bond to cotton—the dominant material in kids’ clothing—and survive repeated laundering. But that didn’t mean that such a glue did not exist. So Linehan asked adhesive manufacturers for samples and started testing them in her apartment. “I would create patch samples in my living room, get the glue, put fabric over the top, and then schlep down to the laundromat to wash, and wash, and wash,” she recalls.
She worked through 45 different adhesives and thousands of individual wash tests—many on her own son’s clothes—before one of them held. Strangely, the spec sheet associated with that glue didn’t describe its ability to survive washing. “They’ve just never looked at the problem creatively,” she says.

But then came the safety question. Over the past three years, Linehan has spent the lion’s share of her time and capital proving that these patches were safe to put on children’s clothing. She brought on a materials scientist to work through the chemistry of this glue, and then poured money into professional safety testing and lawyers. “I’ve bootstrapped this entire company and the majority of my money has gone into testing and legal review,” she says.
The patches are third-party tested and compliant with CPSIA, the U.S. safety standard that ensures products are safe for children 12 and under. They are printed with inks that are certified by Oeko-Tex, an independent research and testing system for textiles, to be free of harmful chemicals. They’re all manufactured domestically, which allows her to ramp up production quickly. “This took three years,” she says. “Potentially could have been a lot quicker if I used something that was a little bit less fit for the target market. But I’m a mom.”
Since the patches are printed rather than embroidered, the design possibilities are endless. Right now, Linehan sells patches that feature kid-friendly designs like rainbows, lightning bolts, flowers, and fruit. There are also space-themed patches that can go on larger stains. But in the future, Linehan could see licensing designs from Bluey, Disney, sports teams, or pop stars. “Why do I have to physically buy a new shirt to be able to have my interests or personality represented?” she says. “Why can’t I patch something that I already have?”

Making the sustainable choice the easier one
While many consumers wish they were more sustainable, doing the more ethical thing is often more expensive or less convenient. In this case, the fashion industry has made it easier to replace a $4 kid’s T-shirt than to mend it.
Linehan’s bet is to make repair the path of least resistance. Parents can slap a sticker on their child’s T-shirt or leggings on the way out the door. The patches are so easy that they can even get their kids to apply the patches themselves, teaching them a lesson about sustainability along the way.
She’s also trying to widen her sustainability mission beyond her own product. In partnership with the nonprofit Still Good on a project called The Good As New, she’s been intercepting stained kids’ clothing items headed for landfill and piling them in her Mazda 6. She has tie-dyed roughly 100 of them with a Brooklyn dye artist, covering stains with her patches, and is giving them away to families before back-to-school. “Our clothes deserve some better ways to keep them in circulation,” she says.
