The Recording Academy has responded to BTS' decision not to submit any of its music for consideration at the 69th Grammy Awards, with CEO Harvey Mason Jr. expressing disappointment while emphasizing that he respects the group's choice.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 30, Mason acknowledged BTS' announcement, which came a day earlier and quickly sparked widespread discussion across the global music industry.

"I am saddened to hear that BTS has chosen not to participate in the Grammy Awards process this year, but as a music creator, I understand and respect their decision," Mason said.

The group's decision followed its announcement that it would not submit tracks from its latest album for Grammy consideration, citing hopes that music would be appreciated regardless of language or region.

Recording Academy Defends New Asian Pop Category

Addressing criticism surrounding the Grammys' newly introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance category, Mason defended the Recording Academy's decision, saying the award was created to celebrate the growing influence of Asian pop music rather than separate artists from major categories.

"The Asian Pop category was created to celebrate the depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia," he said.

Responding to concerns from some fans that the category could sideline Asian artists from the Grammys' top honors, Mason added, "More categories mean more artists' work is recognized. It's never to divide, but to expand who is recognized by our 15,000 Grammy voters."

General Category Eligibility Remains Unchanged

Mason also clarified that artists who submit music in the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category remain eligible for the Grammys' general field awards, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year.

His comments come after BTS announced on Wednesday, July 29, that it would not participate in this year's Grammy submission process.

In the group's statement, the members explained that they hope music can be "heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language."

BTS' decision has fueled ongoing debate about how international artists are recognized at major Western award shows, particularly following the Recording Academy's introduction of a category dedicated to Asian-language pop music.

While the Academy maintains that the new award is intended to broaden recognition for Asian artists, BTS' decision has prompted renewed discussion among fans and industry observers about representation, inclusivity, and how global artists compete for music's highest honors.
