2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland vs 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport Photo by Elle AlderIt’s an enlightened world, this 2026. For so long, Subarus were just out there. At last, however, others are finding their way from the shadows to shed their chrome and embrace a tougher truth — or at least try a little on for size.
So arrive the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland and Honda CR-V Trailsport. Each taking their brands’ small hybrid crossovers for a walk on the wild side while retaining the core practicalities they’re regarded for, these lightly ruggedized new trims commit to different lengths: one with decision, the other a Demi Lovato, as it were.

First impressionsBoth the 2026 RAV4 and CR-V have reached their sixth generations, the Toyota graduating this year while the Honda debuted four years back. Unsurprisingly, then, there’s a little more spring to the RAV4 than the CR-V: fresher in style and technology, the Toyota is distinctly more modern on approach and inside.
Toyota’s strong and straightforward new-gen infotainment system has been updated, with a few tweaks to settings and menus. The Honda CR-V’s native infotainment, on the other hand, felt somewhat rudimentary and dated even at launch — moreso after these few years, not to mention in comparison to the Toyota RAV4’s. In either case of course, most drivers will likely spend most of their time in either car’s standard wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto interfaces.

Around this, too, the RAV4’s interior feels a touch more interesting: pleasant, soft-textured vinyl upholsters all trims above base; soft-touch synthetic panels line the doors and dash; and a few thoughtful cubbies around the interior make for a more versatile space. The CR-V remains more straightforward in both materials and layout: even the CR-V’s soft-ish surfaces feel plasticky and uninspiring by comparison, if still durable and functional in the easy-wipe ride-share sense. Lower CR-V trims (this Trailsport included) aren’t helped by Honda’s cheap-feeling cloth-seat upholstery; this alone may be enough funnel some shoppers toward more expensive trims.

Much closely aligns between the two from here on: point here, point there. Both SUVs received matching IIHS safety ratings of 5.0, with eight airbags in the Toyota and 10 in the Honda CR-V. Highway wind noise is better isolated in the Toyota, but both models’ Ontario assembly lines — Toyota’s world-leading Cambridge plant, in particular — are known for well-buttoned output.

2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland vs 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport Photo by Elle AlderPassenger space is too similar to note in most measures, the biggest differences being the CR-V’s advantages of an inch of rear headroom and three inches’ more leg and hip room. The RAV4 wins on seats-up cargo volume with 1,070 litres (42 L more), while the CR-V measures 53 L more at 2,030 litres with seats folded.
Note that the RAV4’s hybrid battery is packaged under the rear seats to accommodate a spare wheel under the trunk floor, contributing to an imperfect cargo floor with seats folded. The Honda’s hybrid battery occupies the space under its trunk floor, crowding out any underfloor storage but freeing the rear seat bottoms to collapse downward for a flatter fold than the Toyota. Along with that lower ride height, this makes the CR-V the friendlier ute to load cargo into.

2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland Hybrid Photo by Elle AlderPerhaps more important than those touch points is the models’ hybridization. The 2026 Toyota RAV4 is a hybrid as standard, while the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid is a higher grade above a base gas-only powertrain. We’ll discuss pricing in more detail later, but the critical detail here: the $39,430 base 2026 Toyota RAV4 hybrid prices near the non-hybrid CR-V, but the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid models don’t start until way up at $47,900.

Power is something of a toss-up between the two, both making correct figures for the segment. The Honda is less powerful, yet feels lighter and quicker on its feet than the Toyota. It’s unexpectedly pleasant to accelerate either mildly or hurriedly, and the CR-V’s handling around curves and ramps is more engaging while the RAV4 feels a smidge bulky to manoeuvre.
2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland Hybrid Photo by Elle AlderThe new RAV4’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine pairs with a conventional ‘parallel’ hybrid motor for 236 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. A 1.59-kWh hybrid battery can run the car short distances at low speeds before the engine kicks on.
The CR-V Hybrid employs a 2.0-litre four, pairing with its hybrid motor for 204 hp and 247 lb-ft. This powertrain generally achieves the smoother, quieter drive thanks to Honda’s unique ‘two-motor’ hybrid arrangement: one drives the car, the other is driven by the engine as a generator. The CR-V Hybrid’s gas engine only connects to the wheels through its ‘e-CVT’ (continuously variable transmission) at higher loads and speeds; it otherwise primarily serves as a sort of range extender to charge the 1.04-kWh battery while the electric drive motor handles low-speed duties, where it’s the more powerful and efficient partner.

2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport Photo by Elle AlderYet for all the Honda’s cleverness, the Toyota RAV4 is the better hybrid. Not only is the RAV4’s hybrid power a standard feature and less expensive than the CR-V’s, it’s also more efficient on paper and as tested across similar routes and conditions.
NRCan consumption ratings for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland are 5.7 L/100 km city, 6.7 L/100 km highway, and 6.2 L/100 km combined; I observed an even better 6.0L/100 km average. NRCan consumption ratings for the 2026 Honda CR-V Trailsport are 6.3 L/100 km city, 7.2 L/100 km highway, and 6.7 L/100 km combined; I observed 6.7L/100 km.
Off road-inspired trimsArticle content
2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland vs 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport Photo by Elle AlderThe Toyota RAV4 grows into this identity as well as could be hoped, adopting trail-adjacent attire if not to the serious degree of Toyota’s truckier TRD Off-Road models. It’s starting from a different place, of course, but here, as in the previous gen’s latter-years’ Woodland trims, there seems a commitment to make a meaningful effort within the bounds of the everyday practicality still expected of the model.
The 2026 RAV4 Woodland’s larger ‘all-terrain’ tires afford it an extra centimetre of ground clearance — enough to count without throwing accessibility, handling, or highway efficiency out the window. Grille-mounted LED fog lamps offer more illumination for nights in the forest, and crossbars span its roof rails for canoes or other overhead cargo. Most importantly, the Woodland is the one trim to fit a trailer hitch as standard.
Article content
2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland Hybrid Photo by Elle AlderThe Honda CR-V’s Trailsport treatment is a halfhearted foray. Mounting similar ‘all-terrain’ rubber but riding at the same height as usual, the Trailsport is somewhat thinly distinguished even as an outlier trim package. Highlights include orange accent lighting, badging, and trim pieces.
A “silver skid garnish” mimics the appearance of underbody protection, but you’re not going to want to catch it on any nasty obstacles. It’s a flavour-of-the-moment costume without conviction. Still, one point to Honda, here: the CR-V Trailsport gets a dedicated low-speed traction mode for more challenging surfaces.
Neither of these crossovers’ all-terrain tires are destined for much past the trailhead, of course: though treadier than the usual all-seasons for modest terrain beyond the tarmac, these light-duty tires match the cars’ suitability for mild campgrounds and cottage tracks. This isn’t a knock, though: proper off-road tires are noisy and unpleasant to live with. For vehicles designed and destined to spend most of their lives in town and commute, this sensible compromise is no disappointment.
Pricing & competitors
2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland (below) vs 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport (above) Photo by Elle AlderThe base 2026 Toyota RAV4 hybrid prices from $39,430 after destination ($455 more than the base CR-V), but the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid models start way up at $47,900. In fairness to Honda, however, a base price is just what gets feet in the door: shop a mid-range volume trim with more popular options and the gap quickly narrows.
Article content
The two hybrids tested here list quite close to one another at $48,930 for the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland; and $49,300 for the 2026 Honda CR-V Trailsport.
2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport Photo by Elle AlderThough similarly priced, these rugged trims are positioned differently within their respective hierarchies. The Honda Trailsport represents the first small step up from the respectably equipped (Hybrid) base; the Toyota Woodland is a more substantial upgrade from base ‘LE’ and volume-trim ‘XLE’ that most shoppers will likely look toward.
In either case, these trims’ creep toward $50k also reminds of their proximity to the larger (if less efficient) Subaru Outback that we tested here. The Outback is also new for 2026, and (unfortunately for existing fans) has grown into an outright SUV with a larger, more versatile cargo area and passenger cabin than either the RAV4 or the CR-V. Importantly, too, Subaru has discarded its unpleasant old infotainment in favour of a licensed version of the Toyota system seen here. For perspective, however, the Outback’s economy is more conventional, with NRCan ratings of 9.3 L/100 km city, 7.5 highway, and 8.5 L/100 km combined.
2026 Toyota RAV4 Woodland Hybrid Photo by Elle AlderOther competitors in the segment include the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid from $44,845 and platform-sibling Kia Sportage Hybrid from $43,545. Hyundai-Kia products continue to offer strong value propositions, squeezing in more line-item feature content per dollar to entice buyers who aren’t so keen to pay the ‘Toyota Tax.’ NRCan-reported economy figures for these hybrids run 6.7 L/100 km in all categories for the Hyundai, and low 6’s for the Kia.

The Mazda CX-50 Hybrid is offered from $45,145. Higher trims offer classy, properly premium cabin appointments — though most buyers will trim a level or two shy of those more glamorous, caramel-upholstered specs. Economy ratings are posted between the RAV4 and CR-V Hybrids at 6.1 L/100 km city, 6.4 highway, and 6.2 combined.
Final thoughtsArticle content
2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland vs 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Trailsport Photo by Elle AlderBoth the 2026 Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V Hybrid offer strong, Ontario-built hybrid buys. The CR-V’s older design remains respectable, with an innovative and effective hybrid system and a livelier drive that spares it quite the appliance-like on-road character of the RAV4. Appliance is the brief, however, and the alternative offered by Toyota is generally more appealing for a comparable spend.
These outdoorsy trims — or at least Toyota’s — bring a little flair to the appliance practicality, of course, a worthwhile consideration whether or not you’re hauling Blundstones and harnesses. Still, neither of these trims should be understood as go-tos within their lineups: our picks are the entry 2026 CR-V Sport Hybrid ($47,900) and the 2026 RAV4 XLE ($43,230). That first Hybrid CR-V trim fits most of the core-priority content including heated steering wheel, wireless mobile charging and projection, power liftgate, and power (albeit underwhelmingly textured cloth) seats; that second-up RAV4 matches this list and adds that Toyota’s pleasant vinyl upholstery.
As evident, the 2026 Toyota RAV4 distinguishes itself in both style and function. Even beyond its slight economy advantage, the RAV4’s friendlier physical and infotainment controls, versatile cabin storage, and general character give the ever-important sense that there’s ‘more vehicle’ there for the money. And of the Subaru-inspired garnishes at hand, Toyota’s more credible execution only further cements its case.
(Then again: you could just shop an actual Subaru.)
