During a recent appearance on the This Past Weekend with Theo Von podcast, Adkins, 64, spoke about an argument he had with one of his ex-wives that went “a little far” and ended up with him being shot.

“That was uncalled for. That was totally uncalled for,” Adkins quipped. “Let’s just call it quits. We don’t have to go that far.”
Von asked the four-time-married singer-songwriter about his past relationships, and Adkins warned his fans not to “take any advice from me” before detailing the incident.
Adkins said he didn’t think his then-wife Julie Curtis “had any idea” what she was doing when she was holding the gun.
“I’d never seen her hold a gun. I’d never seen her shoot a gun,” he said. “I knew she had one, but I’d never seen her use it. I had a bunch of guns, still have a bunch of guns, and I shoot them pretty often, but I’d never seen her do that. I just I don’t think she knew what was about to happen when she pulled that trigger. She thought it was a toy.”

‘She was mad. Wanted me to leave’The dispute started when she tried to kick him out of their home and he wouldn’t go.
“She was mad. Wanted me to leave, and I wasn’t going to leave, so that’s how it went down,” he recalled. “She put it under my left arm and the bullet came out under my right arm, so it went straight through.”
When Von asked what it felt like to be shot, Adkins said “you just go into shock” and “you don’t really feel anything.”
“I just remember getting up off the floor, and then taking a few steps and then going back down and that’s all I remember,” he said. “It didn’t really hurt … It went under this arm, came out this arm … It went straight through my heart and both my lungs. It was a kill shot.”
Adkins said he didn’t die because Curtis shot him at point-blank range.
“The doctor said the only reason I survived was because the bullet went through at point-blank velocity at muzzle velocity,” the You’re Gonna Miss This singer continued. “So it didn’t have time to mushroom. It was just muzzle velocity, so it just went straight through.”

Adkins didn’t press charges against Curtis, whom he later divorced, but said that the recovery from the injury was painful.
“That was the part that hurt,” he said. “When they do the trauma surgery they just cut you and just crack you open … It took a long time to recover.”
Adkins said that he didn’t think his wife meant to hurt him. “She thought I was indestructible,” he said.
Prior to marrying Curtis, Adkins was wedded to Barbara Lewis, and later went on to get hitched to Rhonda Forlaw, whom he split from in 2014. He is now married to Canadian actress Victoria Pratt.
Adkins said nothing like that happened again in any of his subsequent relationships.
“I never got shot again,” he wisecracked. “At least I can say that.”
“That’s a blessing … At least you got a Canadian because they can’t even own guns. That’s probably good,” Von jokingly said.
“I didn’t even think of that,” Adkins replied. “That’s a plus.”
