SwitchBot (makers of my favorite Find My wallet finder) have launched a new option in the smart blinds space, the SwitchBot Roller Shade.
It is one of the cheaper smart blinds options on the market, and it even has an adjustable bar so it can fit many different window sizes. And if you have the SwitchBot Hub 2, you can connect these shades directly to the Apple Home app using the Matter integration. Unfortunately, they cannot act as a standalone Matter accessory — the hub is required.
The SwitchBot Roller Shade has an adjustable width, varying from 22.8 inches to 72.8 inches. The fabric has to be cut, but the curtain box itself is retractable so you can get a snug fit without having to worry about precise measurements before ordering.
You can also easily replace the shade fabric to match your room decor. It might even be possible to reuse your current curtains and replace only the motor unit, to upgrade your existing shades to become smart home controllable.
Through the Matter integration (hub required), you can control the blinds through the Apple Home app and using Siri on your iPhone, HomePod, Apple TV, or any Apple device. The Home app will expose a slider so you can choose the exact percentage to roll down the blind. And you can incorporate the shades into your Home automations and scenes, so you could have the blinds automatically raise and lower depending on time of day.
The shades incorporate an internal battery that can run for eight months on a single charge, for completely wireless operation. Or you can attach a solar panel to run the shades indefinitely, with no manual charging interventions.
Find out more about the SwitchBot Roller Shade on their website. Given the smart home context, the shade is also pretty affordable, priced at $199 with a $70+ discount currently available to redeem online.
