Andrew Garfield has revealed what was going through his head while auditioning for The Amazing Spider-Man.

The 39-year-old actor, who has donned the iconic red and blue suit three times in his career, shared what the audition process was like for a new book from Marvel titled Spider-Man: No Way Home: The Official Movie Special.

The book features interviews not just from Andrew but from other returning cast members as well as new ones.

In a teaser for the book, which is set to release on February 28, the Academy Award-nominated actor opened up about his experiences.

'I thought, "How cool would it be to fulfill some weird version of a childhood dream,"' he said. 'So, of course, I auditioned and didn’t really think much of it in terms of [if] I would get it or not.'

When he was called back for a screen test, the job suddenly became real to him.

'I suddenly thought, "This could happen. This could be a thing that will change my life.” Obviously, that created conflict in the sense of, "Do I want to be that recognizable? Do I want to take on this responsibility?"'

He then said: 'But then, of course, I did want to! So I decided to screen test and throw my hat in the ring.'

Andrew first suited up as the titular character for The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, and two years later, he got back in action for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Eight years later, he got the opportunity to play the beloved character again in the third Spider-Man film from Marvel Studios, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

In the film, he played one of the three Peter Parkers, alongside his fellow web-slingers Tobey Maguire, 46, and Tom Holland, 26.

The Social Network star continued sharing his story by admitting that he was 'really nervous,' but he controlled his nerves by pretending his screen test was just another movie he was making with his friends.

'I gave myself an acting adjustment, I suppose, which was: you’re a 15-year-old, and you’re making a Spider-Man short film with mates.

'All the crew are friends. There’s no pressure. You get to make it up as you go along, and it’s about the joy of being this character.' 

He added that the decision made it so that he 'was able to trick my ego to be occupied in a corner. I convinced the part of me that puts pressure on myself that it wasn’t needed and that we were just gonna go and have a laugh.

'I think that meant I was able to show up fully and be really present and have a good time. I worked hard at it, but then it was just about throwing it away and seeing what happened.'

Andrew then divulged what it was like working with the other two Spider-Man stars, Tom and Tobey.

Tobey starred in three Spider-Man films as Peter Parker/Spider-Man from 2002 to 2007 and officially hung up his suit after the third film.

Tom has been playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Studios franchise since 2016 and has appeared in six films as the friendly neighborhood superhero, including the box office record-breakers, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

'I think myself, Tom, and Tobey came into this going, “Well, how’s this gonna go?” I’d had lovely interactions with Tom and Tobey previously; not big hangouts, but really sweet moments at parties or events – or as sweet and deep as those things can go, which is not very!'

The Never Let Me Go star went on to say that he got a 'really good vibe' from both Tom and Tobey and was excited to see what they would 'create together.'

Andrew added that they all came into the film with their own separate histories and relationships with the character.

'I think what really was wonderful, and how it unfolded very early on, was Tobey and I felt very aligned and very clear about what our intentions were for being there,' he said.

'Ultimately, it was to serve Tom as an actor and, as characters, serving Tom’s Peter Parker. I think from that place, everything flowed. It enabled Tobey and me to have a bit more fun maybe than we would’ve had if we were the ones fully carrying the story.'
