Hungary has recalled another 25 ambassadors in one of the country’s biggest diplomatic reshuffles in recent years. The latest changes, initiated by Foreign Minister Anita Orbán, affect several of Hungary’s most strategically important diplomatic posts, including Washington, London, Brussels, Moscow and Kyiv.

Key diplomatic posts to change hands

The list of ambassadors whose appointments have been terminated was published in the latest issue of the Hungarian Gazette on Friday evening. Among the most high-profile recalls are Hungary’s ambassadors to:

  • Washington – Szabolcs Ferenc Takács
  • London – Ferenc Kumin
  • Brussels – Tamás Iván Kovács
  • Moscow – Norbert Attila Konkoly
  • Kyiv – Antal Heizer
  • Belgrade – József Zoltán Magyar
  • Bratislava – Csaba Sándor Balogh

The changes also extend to Hungary’s permanent missions to major international organisations, including NATO, the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

Part of a broader diplomatic overhaul

This is the second major wave of ambassadorial recalls since the new government took office. At the end of June, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ended the mandates of 37 heads of diplomatic missions, describing the changes as part of a wider professional renewal of Hungary’s diplomatic service.

At the time, Foreign Minister Anita Orbán said the ministry aimed to build “a professional diplomatic corps operating at the highest standards” with ambassadors capable of advancing Hungary’s foreign policy objectives and strengthening the country’s international influence.
