Prime Minister Péter Magyar has dismissed criticism from political think tank Political Capital after it argued that his greatest political risk is his own constant public presence and communication style.

The debate follows the publication of Political Capital’s latest analysis, which argues that despite the government’s strong position, Magyar could gradually “wear himself out” by dominating Hungary’s political agenda.

According to Political Capital, many Hungarian voters remain highly engaged in politics even during the summer months, meaning the governing Tisza Party cannot afford to become complacent despite the opposition’s current weakness.

The analysis points to the latest Medián opinion poll, which found that support for the governing party fell by 3–5 percentage points compared with the previous month. The researchers suggest the decline may have been linked to the government’s handling of its presidential nomination, although they stress that no direct causal relationship has been established.

Political Capital argues that the government’s first significant setback came not from the opposition but from its own communication mistakes, including the abandonment of a previously promised public consultation over the presidential nomination.

The think tank also notes that the Tisza government faces high public expectations regarding both economic performance and governance. While Hungarians remain optimistic about their own finances and the country’s economic outlook, the report says these expectations could become difficult to meet given the challenging fiscal situation inherited from the previous administration.

One of the report’s central conclusions is that the prime minister currently faces little direct political competition. Instead, Political Capital argues that Magyar has become the dominant figure in Hungarian politics, with government communication largely revolving around his personal appearances and messaging.

According to the analysis, this strategy carries risks.

“For the time being, Péter Magyar’s biggest political opponent is Péter Magyar,” the report states, arguing that his constant visibility, occasional mistakes and highly active communication could eventually reduce his political appeal.

The report also notes that, unlike in previous years, Magyar did not schedule a competing political event during Viktor Orbán’s annual speech in Băile Tușnad (Tusnádfürdő), suggesting he allowed the former prime minister’s appearance to stand on its own rather than attempting to overshadow it.

Magyar reacted directly to the analysis on Facebook after Telex shared an article summarising the report. “There is plenty to wear away,” the prime minister wrote, before adding in another comment that “polishing is not aimless wearing away.”

In a separate Facebook comment beneath another Telex post, Magyar also criticised the outlet for not highlighting one of the government’s latest policy decisions.

He wrote that the government was approving a reduction in VAT on firewood from 27% to 5%, adding: “We promised it, we delivered it. Step by step.”
