Oak Cliff mural, honoring apartment complex explosion victim, to be unveiled

A community mural is taking shape in Oak Cliff at the corner of Clarendon Drive and Hollywood Ave. It depicts familiar faces and images from the neighborhood, such as street vendors, lowriders, and roosters.
It will honor activist Sylvia Collins, who was among the three people killed in the explosion at The Clyde apartment complex in May. Collins, a former Democratic precinct chair, was described as a tireless advocate for justice, equality, and Oak Cliff. The Dallas Morning News wrote that Collins, 79, championed others.
The explosion happened in May; some residents at a neighboring complex still do not have natural gas. A state lawmaker is pushing for an immediate solution to the now 2-month-old problem. Residents tell NBC 5 they feel they have fallen through the cracks.
The owners of ‘The Clyde’ are suing Atmos Energy over the explosion, alleging negligence; some tenants are suing too. They claim Atmos failed to mark gas lines properly before the catastrophic explosion. The National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary findings cited that the gas line struck on May 28 had not been marked.
The mural project was led by Somos Tejas Community, J&E Auto Shop, and a teacher/student duo from Texas Woman’s University. The project celebrates the community and the everyday unsung heroes who make it what it is.
“I wanted to show the hard workers that built this community” – Isabel Martinez, 23, Muralist, said.
“This mural represents Oak Cliff and the determination its residents have to continue calling this area their home” – Jerry Figueroa, owner of J&E Auto, said.
It will be unveiled formally on Sunday with a block party shutting down the intersection.
There will be food, music, school backpacks, and a show featuring the Dallas Lowriders, Aztec Dancers, and a Ballet Folklorico performance from 3 – 6 p.m.
