So much of history is something people learn about in books. But for visitors to the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, history is also shared by people who lived it.
Small pins representing ghettos, concentration camps and death camps carry tremendous weight. But it is the stories behind them that bring history to life.
“I think there’s a bond between holocaust survivors that nobody can understand,” Bagriansky-Zerner said.
Rosain Bagriansky-Zerner and Andras Lacko each share deeply personal accounts of surviving the Holocaust through the museum’s Survivor Speaker Series.
“I had a very happy childhood until they took it away,” Bagriansky-Zerner said.
“We were herded into the ghetto between 5 and 6 years old,” Bagriansky-Zerner said. “It was the capital of Lithuania at that time.”
“I’m from Budapest, Hungary,” Lacko said. “Now by the time they got to Hungary, the Germans perfected this whole thing.”
Museum President and CEO Mary Pat Higgins said hearing directly from survivors gives visitors a perspective that history books cannot.
“I think sharing testimony has helped many of our survivors deal with the trauma they endured,” Higgins said. “Hearing from a survivor firsthand makes the inconceivable more tangible.”
“It was a whole life changed on a dime,” Bagriansky-Zerner said.
The museum’s Survivor Speaker Series allows visitors to hear firsthand accounts of the Holocaust while survivors are still able to share their experiences.
“They had the gas chambers ready, and it was the most efficient killing in history as far as the number of people being eliminated,” Lacko said.
“They knew that if we stayed longer, it would be certain death,” Bagriansky-Zerner said.
“They actually dug a hole that was big enough for a six-year-old to crawl through one day,” Bagriansky-Zerner said. “My father’s secretary was waiting for me in the shadows, and we ran across the river. Some wonderful people came forward to risk their lives to save mine.”
“While our survivors are living and with us, I want as many people as possible to come to this museum and hear them because they help us understand how dangerous it is not to stand up to prejudice and hatred or to be indifferent,” Higgins said.
“Hating anybody for whatever reason because they belong to another group is not what the human population needs to survive and develop and thrive,” Lacko said.
“Here I am part of the last generation of witnesses, and anybody who listens to me becomes witnesses,” Bagriansky-Zerner said.
The museum reminds visitors that 6 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. In some countries, almost no Jewish people survived.
“But youre looking at a 4 percenter here,” Bagriansky-Zerner said.
The survivors continue speaking because so many cannot.
Andras Lacko is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. Friday at the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. The presentation is available both in person and virtually. Tickets are free, but registration is required online.
