Ellen Pompeo is slashing her presence on Grey's Anatomy to just eight episodes of the upcoming 19th season.
The 52-year-old actress achieved international stardom in the lead role of Dr. Meredith Grey on the Shonda Rhimes series.
But now, as she takes on a new role on a Hulu miniseries called Orphan, Deadline reports that she is dialing back her appearances on Grey's Anatomy.

Season 19 will premiere on October 6 and while the number of episodes has not been officially announced, each season typically has 20 or more.
Orphan marks the first live-action role besides Meredith Grey that Ellen has done since she appeared in the movie Life Of The Party in 2005.
Grey's Anatomy began that same year, since which time Ellen's fame and her career have been inextricably linked to the hospital drama.
No decisions have been made about whether Ellen will be leaving the show entirely at any point in the foreseeable future.

Shonda told E! News in 2017: 'Ellen and I have a pact that I'm going to do the show as long as she's going to do the show.'
Although she will only appear on eight episodes this season - an arrangement reportedly reached after months of talks - Ellen will still narrate the series.
Additionally, she remains a co-executive producer on Grey's Anatomy, a title that according to her IMDb she has held since last year.

Now, however, Ellen is expanding her horizons with a Hulu miniseries about the shocking real case of Ukrainian-born adoptee Natalia Grace.
Natalia was purported to be six years old when she was taken in by an American couple called the Barnetts in 2010.
However the Barnetts eventually came to believe she was actually an adult 'sociopath' with dwarfism masquerading as a child.

The Barnetts exclusively alleged to DailyMail TV that Natalia was a con artist who had repeatedly tried to kill her adoptive mother Kristine.
When the case came to light, it was instantly compared to the 2009 horror movie Orphan, including by Kristine herself.
Even before season 19, Ellen's work on Grey's Anatomy had begin to be somewhat scaled back, including on season 17 which her character spent part of in a coma.
