A Texas wedding is making headlines after news of a very special mother-son dance touched hearts around the internet. Matthew and Elisabeth Firth married in May, and the wedding featured a heartwarming and unique way of paying tribute to Matthew Firth’s mother, who died 13 years earlier.

In place of a traditional mother-son dance, Firth stepped onto the dance floor with the woman who received his mom, Amy Firth’s, lungs in a 2012 transplant. Carrie Giddens, the woman who received Amy Firth’s lungs after her death, battled cystic fibrosis and was put on life support prior to receiving the life-saving organ donation. 

Firth told Texas news outlet KWTX that since the wedding “would have truly felt like [his mother] wasn’t there at all,” he “kind of felt her presence” while dancing with Giddens. Giddens said the experience was surreal and emotional. “The fact that he wanted to dance with me — not in place of his mom but to be able to dance with a piece of his mom on his wedding day — it was an honor,” she told KWTX.

What’s more, Giddens is a mother of three, including twin sons who were toddlers when she received the lung transplant. “Not only was I given the opportunity to continue being a mom to my twin boys — they were only 15 months when I got my transplant, and now, they’re going to high school,” said Giddens, “but … we adopted my daughter.”

At the May wedding, a relative told KWTX, “Amy did the breathing, and Carrie did the dancing.” The sentiment is a beautiful way to think about the untraditional mother-son dance, especially since, according to the news outlet, this isn’t the first time Firth and Giddens have shared a heartwarming moment together. The pair has remained in each other’s lives since the transplant, celebrating milestones like anniversaries and birthdays together.

“The relationship has developed over time,” Firth said. “Now, not only does it not feel weird to be around her, but it feels right.”

And, as for Firth’s thoughts on the dance, it’s a special moment the young man can take with him into the next chapter of his life. “It felt like it was Carrie, but at the same time … my mom’s lungs are literally her lungs, so it was as close as I was going to get to that,” he said. “It felt so special.”
