Starting today, Fable 5 will be available to users globally on the Claude platform, while Mythos access has been restored for a set of US organisations.

The US government has reversed its export ban on Anthropic’s Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models, ending a more than two-week-long blockade that sent shockwaves across the world.

“We’ve received notice that the Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5,” Anthropic said late last night (30 June).

The company managed to get the export ban on Mythos partially lifted late last week after placing “appropriate safeguards”, according to US secretary of commerce Howard Lutnick.

Lutnick, today, said that the government worked closely with Anthropic to “analyse and approve Fable 5 to ensure alignment across the US government and strengthen America’s leadership in AI”.

Starting today, Fable 5 will be available to users globally on the Claude platform, while Mythos access has been restored for a set of US organisations, Anthropic said.

“We continue to coordinate with the government to expand access to the broader set of domestic and international partners in the Glasswing programme,” the company added.

The AI start-up found its widely sought-after cybersecurity model Mythos – and its more restrictive iteration, Fable – suspended from foreign access on 12 June. The US cited national security concerns for its abrupt decision to impose an export ban, but did not provide any details, the company said at the time.

“Our understanding is that the government believes it has become aware of a method of bypassing, or ‘jailbreaking’ Fable 5,” read Anthropic’s statement last month.

The export restriction came at a time countries and organisations worldwide – including in the EU – were attempting to access Mythos to secure their own systems.

The European Commission noted, at the time, that developments like these are “a ​further ⁠illustration of why Europe needs to strengthen its technological sovereignty”.

While in a similar statement, Canadian prime minister Mark Carney highlighted the risk of overreliance on a small number of powerful AI tools.

Anthropic had been quick to engage in discussions with the White House as it continues to prepare for a blockbuster public listing expected to value it at more than $1trn.

Meanwhile, the company is also engaged in a legal battle with the Trump administration following a separate incident earlier this year after it refused to change its AI safeguards for usage by the US government.

Also yesterday, Anthropic launched its Claude Sonnet 5 model – marketed as its “most agentic Sonnet model” yet.

The company said that the model reached performance closer to Opus 4.8, but at lower prices.

“It’s a substantial improvement over its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6, on important aspects of agentic performance like reasoning, tool use, coding and knowledge work,” Anthropic said.

The company’s safety assessments found that the new model shows an “overall lower rate of undesirable behaviours” than Sonnet 4.6, and is “generally safer to use in agentic contexts”.

“Evaluations also show that it has a much lower ability to perform cybersecurity tasks than our current Opus models,” Anthropic added.
