Domaine du Canadel, the couple's 425-acre property in Brignoles, sits just minutes from Brad Pitt's Château Miraval.
As wildfires continue to rage across southern France, George and Amal Clooney are facing the possible loss of one of the crown jewels of their $50 million property portfolio. The couple has evacuated Domaine du Canadel, their 425-acre estate near the village of Brignoles, after fast-moving fires have swept into the region, forcing residents to flee. The former wine estate sits in the heart of Provence’s vineyard country, roughly 10 minutes from Brad Pitt’s Château Miraval, the 1,200-acre winery he purchased with his now ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, in 2012.
In a letter to Brignoles mayor Didier Brémond, Clooney reportedly said the family—including the couple’s 9-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella—left without knowing whether their hilltop home would survive, while pledging to help rebuild the community once the fires are extinguished.
“At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment,” Clooney wrote in a note obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole.”
The sprawling French retreat has become the family’s primary residence since they purchased the former wine estate in 2021 for €7 million (roughly $8.3 million at the time). Set amid vineyards, olive groves, and lavender gardens, the 18th-century property includes a roughly 10,000-square-foot main residence, a tennis court, swimming pool, private lake, and a working vineyard where the Clooneys debuted their first estate-produced wines in 2024.
The Provence estate is just one residence in the couple’s globe-spanning property portfolio. George famously purchased Villa Oleandra on Italy‘s Lake Como more than two decades ago before expanding the compound with neighboring properties, creating one of the lake’s largest private estates. The couple also owns the Grade II-listed Aberdash House in the U.K., a Georgian manor on a private island in the River Thames, as well as a luxury condominium in Manhattan that Amal used as a home base while teaching at Columbia Law School and working with the United Nations.
France, however, has represented more than another luxury address. Clooney has repeatedly said the move was driven by a desire to give his children a quieter upbringing away from Hollywood, embracing a slower pace of life centered around farming and wine production.
The fires threatening Brignoles are part of a broader wave of wildfires fueled by extreme heat and strong winds that have scorched parts of France, Spain, Italy, and Greece in recent days, putting thousands of homes at risk and forcing hundreds of thousands of people to evacaute across southwest Europe.
