Android 17 is officially available for a number of Google Pixel devices now that it’s out of beta. With that, some are reporting a strange bug that essentially breaks the Google Pixel’s ability to recognize scrolling touch input.
According to a couple of reports on Reddit, the Android 17 update has introduced an issue that breaks how Google Pixel devices recognize a scrolling touch input (via Android Authority). Some have reported that a swipe up will register as a swipe down every so often. Others note that the phone stops registering swipes in nearly repeatable patterns, i.e., five successful swipes followed by a short period of broken touch recognition.
The issue seems to affect multiple Pixel generations, if the thread comments are any indication. It looks like the issue spans back to the Pixel 7, and it seems most model variants are seeing the issue.
Google has noted that it is aware of the Pixel scrolling issue, as it commented on one post, trying to offer some troubleshooting advice. Beyond that, it’s unclear if there is a fix on the way.
One user did mention that they seemed to have fixed the problem by turning off “triple tap to zoom” in the accessibility settings. A couple of users backed that sentiment up with their own success, which might suggest Android 17 is registering triple taps incorrectly, and something is breaking in the input pipeline.
In any case, the Google Pixel’s scrolling issues only began appearing after an update to Android 17. In a previous poll, we asked users how they felt about Android 17’s performance. While that poll hasn’t been around for long enough to consider the results well-baked, it appears the experience is split between those seeing no difference and those getting a snappier Pixel.
