Leaks gave a quick preview of the Oura Ring 5, but it wasn’t clear just how much thinner the new model is. The $50 price jump is now confirmed for Oura’s new wearable that senses enhanced blood pressure patterns and live activity, now.

At 6.09mm wide and 2.28mm thick, the Oura Ring 5 is a full 40% smaller than the Oura Ring 4. Size was one of the biggest points of contention for a wearable that outperforms a lot of other devices in the same form. That size difference is considerable when factoring in Oura’s claim that the new ring is rated for a full week of use, or 6 to 9 days.

The physical size difference seems to mean little to battery life, as a full week would be a big jump if it translates to real-world use. In Oura’s visual comparison, the disparity between models looks huge.

Within the new, thin Oura Ring 5 is a new set of sensors that Oura says are built for better accuracy. Each has new sensor domes with stronger LEDs to improve data consistency. Oura claims the Oura Ring 5 has a 99% heart rate accuracy compared to ECG2 readings and 95% sleep staging accuracy compared to clinical sleep labs.

Oura Ring 5 users will see new features on top of physical changes. More advanced blood pressure patterns will be visible in the app, though actual blood pressure numbers can be entered using a third-party monitor. The Oura Ring 5 does not track actual blood pressure readings. Oura notes that new alerts will warn users about increased blood pressure patterns during the day and at night, which is when those patterns are the cleanest. The app will also detail sleep disturbances, like breathing issues, over a period of 30 days as opposed to small blips of information.

GLP-1 insights are also new to the Oura Ring 5. The app will give users a specific journey view for those managing weight and side effects.

Another upgrade is that the Oura Ring 5 is now actually able to track workouts in real-time. The Oura Ring 4 could log activity after processing it and suggesting it, but that process had some friction to it. The Oura Ring 5 will show and log activity as it happens, so users can see stats during a workout.

The Oura Ring 5 starts at $399, which is a big jump from the $349 price tag of the Oura Ring 4. The app remains at $6/month, but it’s been worth it in our experience. If this model is even lighter and thinner with better performance than the previous version, the $50 might be properly justified. Time will tell.
