One month ago, the Corvette ZR1X with IndyCar veteran JR Hildebrand behind the wheel set a new record for production cars at the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. The ultimate AWD Drive Corvette made the run up the 14,115-ft summit and smashed the standing record by 23 seconds with a time of 9:30.104!
Today, Chevrolet posted to the YouTube the PDR video of the ZR1X’s full “race to the clouds.”
Hildebrand’s involvement began with the reveal of the ZR1, which featured several promo images taken on the mountain. Seeing those pictures and recognizing the location, he fired off several messages to everyone he knew at GM about getting a seat in the car for the attempt. Then the ZR1X was released and it became apparent that the hybrid AWD Corvette would be the best car for the attempt at a Pikes Peak record.
Corvette’s Executive Chief Engineer Tony Roma says there were discussions about running the ZR1 but the ZR1X was the better candidate for a Pikes Peak run. “We talked about running the ZR1 last year,” Roma said. “Really, the ZR1X is a better match to the mountain. The electrification, with 186 horsepower, is still there all the way up to the top of the hill. Even though our turbochargers do a really, really good job of compensating, it doesn’t quite make up for that much.”
The ZR1X chosen to race in the event was actually a preproduction unit with experimental VIN (EX). With the high speeds and no guardrails in place, the race organizers required a full slate of safety equipment. The interior was stripped and then a full roll cage added, a fire suppression system was installed, and the regular “saddle bag” gas tanks in the C8 were blocked off in favor of a 10-gallon fuel cell mounted in the trunk that would carry just enough fuel to get to the top.
Road & Track did a behind-the-scenes feature of the ZR1X’s record Pikes Peak run and they also had this tidbit about the team’s strategy with the AWD ZR1X:
Testing proved Chevy’s race day strategy correct: Endurance mode to save battery charge for the higher elevations, instead relying on the massive turbos to push 24 psi of boost through the lower sections. Doing so also allowed regenerative braking to warm up the ZR1X’s relatively diminutive 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery. Then, once oxygen starvation began to affect ICE output, Hildebrand started using the push-to-pass e-boost button as much as possible. All throughout, he kept the MagneRide suspension dampers in Track mode, and even (surprisingly) admitted to keeping the traction control activated—albeit at the lowest setting—to keep the hybrid powertrain happiest.
With weather always being a factor at Pikes Peak, the run by the ZR1X happened on one of the nicest days of the year and that will make any further attempts at dethroning the ZR1X even harder. Apparently, all this was foreseen by Hildebrand who has the perfect parting shot in this story:
“I’ve not been shy about saying this from the beginning,” Hildebrand said. “As far as I’m concerned, we’re not just here to eclipse the current number for the fastest production car at Pikes Peak. We’re here to lay down a time that scares other people away from coming after it anytime soon.”
