Ferrari has no interest in giving in to complacency.
The legendary sports car maker’s CEO, Benedetto Vigna, revealed during the company’s latest earnings call that it will unveil two new models by the end of the year, according to Motor1.com. That wasn’t the only surprise the executive had in store for investors, though. He also revealed the company has begun testing out biofuels in its vehicles.
During the call, the marque’s head exec revealed that despite deliveries dipping slightly because of model changeover, Ferrari had achieved an operating profit of 605 million euros and a net profit of 463 million euros, the latter of which represents a 9 percent increase year over year. Thanks to the strong results, which were driven by continued demand for Prancing Horses and more customers opting to personalize their vehicle, the company is raising its full-year guidance, according to CNBC. The company now expects to make $7.6 billion this year, up from an earlier target of $7.5 billion.
As welcome as this news will be to the company’s investors, even more exciting was when Vigna said the company would unveil two new models before the year is over. That was all that the executive said about the vehicles, but Motor1.com suggests the new reveals could be an open-top version of the F80 hypercar, possibly called the Aperta, and an exclusive 12Cilindri variant called the Versione Speciale. The latter would be the second new model based on the V-12 this year, following the Manuale (picture up top) from earlier this month, which features a unique gearbox that offers both automatic and manual driving modes.
That model, along with the debut of the polarizing Luce EV, shows that the 86-year-old automaker isn’t afraid to try new things. Ferrari’s top boss also said the company has tested out biofuels in its engine. Vigna didn’t go into specifics, but he did say they, and other carbon-neutral fuels, “work well in our engines. Nothing changes.” We don’t know what the company’s alternative fuel strategy is, but the fact that they have tested them out suggests the company is looking to give itself options and keep the combustion engines its customers love so much around longer.
It may sound unusual, but Ferrari tends to know what it’s doing. Just look at the Luce. All the grumbling about its powertrain and unorthodox styling didn’t stop it from selling out.
