Wood has long been a favourite decor choice for artefacts, partitions, and now even as a panelling material. But there is a quiet shift in using wooden doors as centrepieces in urban homes.

From gothic motifs to facial amalgamations, we look at the latest collection, ‘Sabha’, created by Kosh, a Bengaluru-based design studio, known for its exploration of handmade craft, materiality and storytelling. Drawing on the concept of a sabha as a space, sculptural wooden doors and décor pieces reflect on memory and belonging, using tactility to create an impression.

Founded in 2007 by Nidhi and Ketan Gupta, curating ‘Sabha’ has been a creative process. “We began to think about how a home gathers things, how it holds them quietly, until they begin to define the space on their own,” says Nidhi.

Ketan, co-founder of the studio, explains the choice of wood for this collection. “All our wooden pieces are joinery-based, using mango wood, Ghana teak, teak from Madhya Pradesh and Mysuru as well.” He says they are easier to carve and have exquisite grain that shines in the ‘Sabha’ collection.

“Sabha was not developed at one shot,” adds Nidhi. “We added to the collection year on year from 2023. Each piece is painstakingly handcrafted and can be made to order (taking two to three months), while we do have a few stock pieces. We offer clients 3D renders to show them what the objects would look like in their interiors as well.”

This set of three panels celebrates anonymous faces sans features, almost inspired by the Stonehenge sculptures or African masks. Carved wooden faces, each unique and subtly distinct, coalesce into a whole. The pieces make a statement celebrating the individual within a collective. Price: ₹1,69,800

This piece is a paean to the ephemeral nature of light. Based on the idea of thresholds within Indian homes, it playfully conceals and reveals in equal measure. The large panel is heavy and best used with support so that it can cast shadows on the walls. Price: ₹2,77,200

This piece, like Maya, is finely detailed and offers temple imagery on a single panel that can be used in a pooja room or even on the wall of a foyer or living room. The wooden carving juxtaposed with burnished metal framing offers a mixed-medium, tactile objet d’art. Price: ₹64,080

This tribal totem-inspired panel borrows from Indian and Native American leitmotifs. The panel is carved with details that are resplendent when they catch the light. As the background recedes, the animal and armour elements catch your eye with their exquisite detail. Price: ₹1,32,500
