Frances Barber has reportedly been cast in Coronation Street for a guest role connected to Bernie Winter-Alahan, with the storyline expected to play out later this year.
Barber is reported by The Sun to be joining the ITV soap as a relative of Bernie’s, appearing in Weatherfield in a guest capacity. Further details about Barber’s Coronation Street character have yet to be confirmed.
The actress was one of 58 entertainers or authors who, in September 2020, signed a letter in support of controversial Harry Potter writer JK Rowling after she was criticised for her views on transgender people.

Two years earlier, in 2018, she was among a group of almost 200 famous faces, also including James Dreyfus, who signed an open letter which claimed that the debate around reforms to the Gender Recognition Act was being shut down by public and private bodies.
Barber has also shared her own thoughts on trans people, saying that she wanted to discuss whether a “man can have a cervix” with Labour’s Emily Thornberry.
Thornberry welcomed the discussion at a Town Hall meeting, but also replied: “My cousin is a trans man. I presume he has a cervix. I haven’t asked – it’s none of my business. My business is to love him and protect him from bullying. You are better than this.”
Nowadays, she appears to spend her free time posting on X about politics in the UK and the US.
Barber’s reported Corrie roleThe casting update emerged on 30 June as Coronation Street storylines for the second half of the year begin to take shape.
Cast movement has been a regular talking point for viewers in 2026, including the exit of Daniel Brocklebank’s gay character Billy Mayhew earlier this year.
