Medicaid Expansion Helps Young Adults With Kidney Failure

In the current issue of JAMA Pediatrics, Swaminathan and colleagues assessed Medicaid expansion under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA; P.L. 111-148, as amended) for adolescents and young adults (AYA) with kidney failure who initiated dialysis. The ACA Medicaid expansion gave states the option of extending insurance coverage to low-income adults, including AYA, who had an income up to 138% of the federal poverty level. Previously, in many states AYA became ineligible for Medicaid on turning 19 years of age, which led to difficulties obtaining continued health care access and coverage. Consistent health care is particularly paramount during transition to adulthood for AYA with kidney failure, a complex chronic condition with a high risk of morbidity and mortality as well as dependency on uninterrupted access to high-quality dialysis and related treatments.
