For AI apps, product validation is behavioral. The only thing that actually tells you whether someone will pay is what they do when the free version runs out.
That usually shows up at the first cap — a credit limit, an export block, a teammate limit. If someone hits it and comes back anyway, you’ve got your first real sign they’ll pay.

Engagement is harder to interpret in AI apps because users can get something genuinely useful without building dependency. Free alternatives are everywhere, switching costs are often close to zero, and a user can usually move to a competitor without losing anything they built.
In traditional SaaS, deep engagement usually increases the cost of leaving. Six months into a project management tool, a user has projects stored in it, processes built around it, and teammates who have adapted to the workflow.
Leaving means migrating data, rebuilding habits, and disrupting other people’s work, so frequent use is more likely to reflect real dependency.

Someone who logs in once and does one complete posting run is more likely to pay than someone who logs in five times and experiments. The action that matters is the completed task, not the exploration.
So the question isn’t “did they come back?” It is “did they come back to finish the same job?”
Signal 2 — Users hit a limit and still returnUsage limits show whether someone will pay when they interrupt something the user wants to keep doing. If a user hits a token, credit, export, or workflow limit and leaves, the AI app may not be proving its value quickly enough yet. If they come back, the limit has exposed a paid-access opportunity.

Examine your usage-limit behavior as well as the behavior of users after hitting their limit. Do they drop off immediately after hitting their free token cap? Nicky Zhu discovered this from the opposite direction. She initially gated advanced analytics, exports, dashboards, and historical data because those looked like premium features. Almost nobody cared.
What I should have gated was collaboration depth: shared workspaces, team permissions, and multi-user editing. Gating ‘nice to have’ features teaches you nothing. Gate the feature that would break someone’s workflow if it disappeared.
