Work is underway to improve access to a stunning Gwynedd beach.

The beach walkways at Marian-y-De in Pwllheli have fallen into disrepair in recent years from wear and tear and storm damage.

It has seen diggers on the beach in recent days as work is done to either replace or upgrade the structures.

RISE Pwllheli captured images of the work in progress and said it is important to ensure that the path is truly useful for people of all abilities.

They have emailed Gwynedd Council and local Councillor Hefin Underwood to share some practical suggestions - including extending the path to the pavement so that wheelchair users, mobility scooters, prams and walking assistants can reach the beach safely.

“Pwllheli is a coastal town, access to the beach should be a right, not a privilege,” they added.

A Cyngor Gwynedd spokesperson said: “Cyngor Gwynedd has secured funding from the Welsh Government’s Brilliant Basics Fund 2025-2026/27 to deliver a series of improvements at Pwllheli Marian-y-De beach which includes replacing and upgrading the wooden walkway accesses.

"The improvements will ensure the area is safer and more accessible for residents and visitors throughout the year, as the old walkways had deteriorated and suffered significant storm damage in recent years.

“The timber post-and-rail fence that ran along the upper section of beach also sustained significant damage from the sea and was subsequently removed in autumn 2025.

“Plans to carry out improvements along the beach’s promenade, including new seating areas and the installation of information panels are also being considered.”
