Norwalk police said two teenagers were thrown from a motorized scooter in a Sunday crash. 

NORWALK —Two 16-year-olds were thrown from a motorized scooter following a crash involving an SUV at a Water Street intersection in Norwalk Sunday afternoon, according to police.

The operator of the scooter suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Norwalk police Lt. Ramon Tejada said in a news release Monday. 

The SUV had been traveling north on Water Street while the scooter was traveling south, Tejada said. The collision occurred as the SUV was turning left onto Hanford Place, Tejada said.

Tejada said neither teen was wearing a helmet.

"We would like to remind the public that helmets are one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk and severity of head injuries in crashes involving bicycles, scooters, and similar vehicles," Tejada said. "While the investigation into this collision remains ongoing, wearing a properly fitted helmet can 
significantly reduce the severity of injuries in the event of a crash."
