On behalf of the biotech sector, BIOTECanada welcomes the report of the Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Sector Task Force released today.  In particular, we appreciate the clear definition of the challenges facing the sector and the roadmap it provides toward future potential solutions.  There is much to do, and we urge the government to move quickly towards addressing the recommendations.  In a rapidly-changing global environment, one in which many jurisdictions are vying to secure patient access to needed medicines as well as life sciences investment and sectoral growth, we must move quickly.

Throughout the Task Force process, BIOTECanada brought forward the perspectives and priorities of its members to ensure the sector’s experience was reflected in the discussions. The final report provides an important and timely examination of key areas including access to and affordability of medications; security of supply; modernization of regulatory and decision-making processes; and the advancement of translational research, innovation; and commercialization across the life sciences ecosystem.

As the report states, “incremental change will not be sufficient to meet the moment. Decisive action, supported by sustained collaboration, will be required to strengthen outcomes for people in Canada and position Canada for greater resilience and growth in the global life sciences landscape.”

BIOTECanada has consistently advocated for the conditions needed to realize Canada’s potential as a global leader in life sciences. However, persistent challenges related to access to investment and the need for a modern, efficient regulatory system continue to limit the sector’s ability to compete globally. The report recognizes these barriers and their impact on Canada’s competitiveness.

BIOTECanada looks forward to continuing this work the federal government and alongside our members to translate these recommendations into meaningful action that strengthens Canada’s life sciences sector, supports economic growth, and reinforces the country’s position as a competitive and trusted global partner.
