Most of us are familiar with Joan Miro’s paintings and sculptures. And know that the great artist used to live and work on Mallorca for almost thirty years. His studio and garden are part of Miró Mallorca, today, and belong to a unique museum.

It attracts travelers from all over the world. „And of course, every Mallorcan comes to visit. But only once. And that’s it,“ the new director of Miró Mallorca admits. Antònia Maria Perelló was born on the island but she spent most of her professional life on the peninsula before she returned to Mallorca, just recently.

In the interview with Estilo Palma Antònia talks about her ideas and concepts to open the Miró museum to a broader audience, to create a platform of exchange and events. Thus encouraging locals and visitors to come here more frequently.

Before taking over the lead of Miró Mallorca, Antònia was head of the collection and curator at the MACBA. For 32 years she was responsible for some of the most outstanding exhibitions at Barcelona’s fabulous Museum of Contemporary Art.

Miró Matters

Convinced that Joan Miró’s stance and his dedication to nature are at the heart of many current discussions, she wants to show „how much his work still matters, today.“

Therefore, Antònia plans to open the museum to other contemporary artists. Young local artists, even, who enter into a dialog with Miró or are influenced by him one way or another.

Go-to Place for Art Lovers

In addition to changing exhibitions recurring public events like summer concerts, film documentaries, or public lectures are intended to attract a diverse crowd and establish the campus as a go to place for art lovers. To strengthen the ties and form a network among them, one of the next initiatives is to set up a circle of Friends of the Miró Mallorca Foundation.

Other Favorite Places

In Estilo Palma’s interview series “Café con …”, the last question is always about a favorite place on the island. Antonia loves the valley of Sóller with its small villages. „Sitting in the shade of a tall tree and taking a deep breath of nature makes me happy.“ But she is also fascinated by the proud palacios in Palma, above all Can Vivot.
