The Michigan basketball team was dealt a tough blow when championship coach Dusty May decided to leave. May took the head coaching job with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks. There is some good news for the Wolverines though, as a star transfer is sticking around the program.

“Michigan transfer big-man J.P. Estrella is going to remain with the Wolverines, he told ESPN, as he quickly bonded with interim coach Mike Boynton and his teammates after arriving on campus nearly two weeks ago,” Pete Thamel reported for ESPN on X.

Estrella is a transfer from Tennessee. He averaged 10 points and five rebounds a game for the Volunteers, during the 2025-26 season. His Tennessee squad reached the NCAA tournament, losing in the Elite Eight.

Estrella had a breakout year this past basketball season. He played in 33 games for the Volunteers, with 13 starts. He saw an increase in his minutes and marked improvement in his three-point shooting.

Michigan is moving on from Dusty May

Michigan won the national championship in college basketball this past season. The Wolverines are now led by interim coach Mike Boynton Jr. Boynton reportedly will be considered as a full-time replacement to May.

Before his time at Michigan, Boynton was the head coach at Oklahoma State. He helped recruit star point guard Cade Cunningham, who played for the Cowboys before moving on to the NBA.

Boynton had an up-and-down tenure at Oklahoma State. Time will tell if he is able to find success with the Wolverines.

“I found out Monday morning like everybody else,” Boynton said when he got the Michigan job, per 247 Sports. “First of all, what a tremendous opportunity. Dusty is one of the elite basketball coaches in the world, I think. He obviously did great work here at Michigan with us, and his record is going to continue to do well, and we’re excited tonight for these guys here at the Draft, and for Michigan basketball, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity to continue to lead us.”

The college basketball season starts in the fall.
