A Grade I-listed house built with stones that fell during the construction of Ely Cathedral is on sale for £1,350,000.

The four-bedroom house is only 137 metres away from Ely Cathedral and dates back to the thirteenth century.

The property was later used as the stables and hayloft for the Bishop's Palace, which itself was built in the fifteenth century.

The house, known as 9 The Gallery, was purchased by the current owner’s father in 2015 from the Church Commissioners for England.

Arranged around a courtyard with a large camellia tree, the house features an imposing front door that opens into a hallway, where a window overlooks the cathedral grounds.

The ground floor of the property is home to the thirteenth century section of the building.

On part of the ground floor, the original stable layout remains visible and there are thirteenth century narrow lancet windows which have remained unchanged since the house was first built.

Later converted into a large living room, the area still retains period hay mangers and historic boarding believed to be hundreds of years old, as well as an historic trap door which would have been used to fetch hay from the loft above.

While period features have been maintained, the living room now comes with underfloor heating and bi-fold doors leading through to the courtyard outside.

Another section of the building dating to the thirteenth century and previously used as an apple store and hayloft, is now used as a music room and study.

The remainder of the property dates back to the Victorian period but has been designed to complement the building’s older section.

The house comes with a retro 1950s English Rose kitchen, acquired by the owners’ father.

The kitchen units were produced by English Rose using post-war surplus materials, while the floor is made from Victorian tiles.

Upstairs, one of the two bathrooms enjoys views of Ely Cathedral’s West Tower. In total, the house spans approximately 3,624 sq ft.

Outside there is a walled courtyard which would have originally been the stable yard. The property also has a double garage.

Should historic buildings be sold privately or kept for public use and preservation?

What's your view?

Daniel Gover, an estate agent at Cheffins in Ely said: 'The Gallery is a house for someone who loves history.

'It’s one of the oldest buildings in Ely and has some incredible features which date from the thirteenth century.

'Being only a stone’s throw from Ely Cathedral and the city centre, it would be perfect for someone looking for a house where they can make the most of what Ely has to offer, but in a spacious and historic building.

'With four bedrooms and tons of living space it would also work for a family, perhaps those looking to move out of London or Cambridge and get more for their money.

'I expect the house to be of interest for those with an interest in history and architecture, who can really appreciate what an unusual building it is.'
