A woman and her pet dog narrowly escaped a close encounter with a grizzly bear in Canada's Alberta province after the animal repeatedly approached and charged toward them during a walk in the wilderness, with the dramatic confrontation captured on video that has since gone viral.
The incident occurred on June 24 in Kananaskis Country, a popular outdoor recreation area west of Calgary known for its abundant wildlife, including grizzly bears.
The woman, who was walking her dog on a leash near a campsite, remained remarkably calm as the bear stalked the pair for nearly two minutes before they safely retreated without injuries.
The footage has drawn widespread attention online, not only because of the proximity of the encounter but also because wildlife experts say the woman's response closely followed recommended bear-safety practices that may have prevented the situation from escalating.
Bear repeatedly approached before retreatingThe video shows the grizzly pacing toward the woman and her leashed dog before standing on its hind legs several times and making multiple bluff charges.
As the bear moved closer, the woman slowly backed away while firmly shouting, "Get away! Get away!" without turning to run.
Throughout the encounter, she continued to keep the bear in sight while making loud noises in an effort to discourage it.
Reports also indicate she threw an object described by various outlets as either a coffee mug or a water bottle to distract the bear before leaving the area with her dog.
The dog remained on its leash during the entire encounter, a precaution wildlife officials recommend because unleashed dogs can provoke bears or lead them back toward their owners.
Despite several tense moments when the bear closed the distance, neither the woman nor her dog was injured.
Wildlife officials urge caution in bear countryFollowing the incident, Alberta Parks said it is aware of the encounter and is monitoring the bear's behavior while reminding visitors to exercise caution in the area.
Park officials advise hikers to carry bear spray, travel in groups whenever possible, make noise while on trails to avoid surprising wildlife, and keep dogs leashed in bear habitat.
Wildlife experts also caution that running from a grizzly bear can trigger its instinct to chase.
Instead, people are generally advised to remain calm, speak in a firm voice, make themselves appear larger, slowly back away, and use bear spray if an attack becomes imminent.
The encounter comes during the busy summer hiking season, when both visitors and bears are more active in Alberta's backcountry, increasing the likelihood of wildlife encounters.
Although visibly shaken, the woman and her dog escaped safely.
