An ocean water closure in Laguna Beach was in effect ahead of the holiday weekend due to a 2,000-gallon sewage spill.
The spill at Thalia Beach is next to the Cohen family’s home on Anita Street. Family members said the raw sewage spilled out Thursday afternoon.
“Our phone started blowing up, like what the heck is going on,” said Lee Cohen. “That pipe down there was spraying sewage about 10 feet into the air. Muddy water. Thick sludge, but thankfully there’s a lot of water mixed into it, which causes it to flow, but sadly it went out into the ocean, so I would not be surfing today.”
Then, there’s the odor.
“Horrid. It smells actually how you think it would,” said neighbor Shaw Sullivan. “I went and looked and there was a lot of effluent going down the valley there between this project here and their house.”
Some flowed onto Cohen’s deck, but most went into the ocean.
The OC Health Care Agency’s Environmental Health Division closed the beach one quarter (0.25) miles upcoast to one quarter (0.25) miles downcoast of Anita Street at Thalia Beach. The spill was caused by a malfunction of a force main sewer line pump.
The area will stay closed to ocean water contact for a minimum of three days and until the results of water quality monitoring are acceptable.
