There are designer bags that fall in and out of fashion, and there are designer bags that will forever be iconic. Sure, Jacquemus' micro bags were a moment in 2019; but they were hardly going to have the 40-year staying power of Hermès's iconic Birkin.
Prada's Suede Bowling Bag falls decisively into the latter camp. Having been snapped on the arms of everyone from Rihanna and Bella Hadid to Kendall Jenner and Alexa Chung, it's been an It-girl accessory of choice since it launched in 2000.
It's easy to see why: it's slouchy yet structured, made with deliciously soft suede, features minimalist branding (quiet luxury vibes), and feels plucked straight from a ‘90s supermodel’s off-duty wardrobe. It's also the perfect mocha shade for 2026, given the fashion set are lusting after chocolatey pieces.
The one drawback? The price tag. At £3,151, we're not going to be swanning into the office with the Prada purse any time soon.
Which is why Monsoon’s £99 Cate Suede Bowler Bag feels like a very timely arrival. The high-street style taps into the same bowling-bag revival that’s been quietly bubbling away on runways and TikTok alike. Think rounded top handles, a roomy, east-west shape and that supple suede finish that instantly makes any outfit look way more expensive than it is.
Available in the same rich, wear-with-everything neutral, the Cate bag features double top handles, a zip fastening and enough space for the daily essentials (yes, even your ridiculously massive water bottle). The silhouette is strikingly similar to Prada’s cult favourite – minus the tiny triangular plaque and the four-figure price tag.
Monsoon's version is priced at £99, which means you could technically buy 31 of them for the price of Prada's bag (and still have change left over). That’s one for every day of the month, with a spare for emergencies (handbag emergencies are real, of course).
We're sure Prada’s suede will be buttery soft beyond belief with an immaculate finish, and that fashion editors would quickly discern the differences. But for us mere mortals, the shared structured, throwback bowler vibe means we the differences hardly matter – which, given the gulf between the two, price-wise, makes the Monsoon version the one we’ll be shopping.
The Cate Suede Bowler Bag is available online and in-store now for £99. Still a bit out of your price range? Scroll for three more pretty suede (okay, faux suede) options that'll set you back less than £50. You're welcome.
