Passing your driving test used to be a key milestone on the road to independence – and finally ditching lifts from parents.

But now learning to drive can be added to the list of norms scorned by Gen Z, who'd rather take an Uber.

Half of twentysomethings surveyed say they have no plans to ever learn to drive, while the same number think they can happily live without ever owning a car.

Nearly one in three of the 2,000 quizzed admit they are too scared to get behind the wheel, while a quarter are put off by fuel prices.

More than half say owning a car in a city is pointless because of public transport, cycling and taxi apps.

Nearly 80 per cent say they would rather spend money on holidays.

The survey by Hive Energy follows research showing a third of Gen Z would rather text when they arrive somewhere, instead of ringing a doorbell or knocking on the door.

The findings come as Hive shines a spotlight on greener travel during London Climate Action Week, with its Hive Taxi appearing in Battersea Park.
