Canada’s high hopes of retaining its One-Day International (ODI) status and qualifying for the World Cup (50 overs) took a huge hit on the outskirts of Dundee on Tuesday.

The United Arab Emirates dealt Canada a blow with an unexpected one-sided 97-run victory. The UAE has been brilliant in this Cricket World Cup League 2 fixtures in Scotland as in its previous encounter it was beaten by Scotland by one wicket with a ball to spare in a dramatic finish.

UAE made 282 for six after being put in to bat by Canada with Rahul Chopra leading the way with a brilliant 127 off 118 balls and Harpreet Singh Bhatia weighed in with a solid 81. Canada failed with the bat again as it could only manage 185 in 33.4 overs.

Stars for Canada in this drastic defeat were opening bowlers Kaleem Sana and his new-ball partner Zahid Shirzad, who starred with bat and ball. Sana rattled UAE’s top order with his three wickets while conceding a meagre 39 runs and Shirzad captured two for 52. Shirzad also carried Canada’s tail with swashbuckling 54 off 26 balls in an innings laced with five huge sixes and four boundaries.

It is still a mystery as to why Sana, one of the best bowlers among the associate nations, is playing without a contract. Hopefully, Cricket Canada wakes up in time and gives Sana his contract before the team travels to Oman for its final matches for this year.

Canada still harbours slim hopes of retaining its ODI status and playing in the World Cup when it travels to Oman to take on the host nation and Nepal in October.

The other star in a losing cause on Tuesday was opening batsman Aaron Johnson, who was the top scorer with a blistering 70 that included seven fours and two sixes off 73 balls.

He was one of three batsmen to reach double figures in an awful showing that saw skipper Saad Bin Zafar make 20 and, of course, that blinder from Shirzad.

ASSOCIATES UP IN ARMS

The world of soccer is in turmoil and everyone that loves the sport is waiting with bated breath on the future of Gianni Infantino, the embattled president of FIFA.

Of course, it is Infantino’s bloated ego that has thrown the sport into a quandary and the majority of countries are hoping it will end up with his demise.

While that controversy is being played out, it appears the world’s second-most popular sport is also bent on running roughshod over its own members. The International Cricket Council finds itself in the crosshairs of its members and there’s one huge difference in that it has picked on its associate members, not the elite Test-playing countries.

The associate countries like Canada do not carry a heavy clout, but once the rot sets in there is no stopping it from spreading and eventually affecting the entire game. Infantino’s FIFA ruled the world by dishing out millions of dollars to the various continental bodies and cricket’s parent body believes that money rules.

But two of the leading associate countries — the Netherlands and Scotland — have taken on the mighty ICC and voiced their concerns the national body has made to the 2027 World Cup (50 overs) structure that will affect the lower-ranked squads

Some of the associate countries voiced their concerns to the ICC some three weeks ago and what has surprised them is that there has been no response from the ICC.

“This is disappointing and disrespectful given the significance of the issues raised,” said a joint statement from the Dutch and Scotland.

One would have expected the ICC to ask for some feedback from the countries before rushing to make these changes. It is obvious the ICC is following the same route as FIFA in buying votes from the continental bodies.

ICC is headed by Jay Shah, an Indian cricket administrator who also was once president of the Asian Cricket Council. And like Infantino, he too seems more interested in the mighty dollar rather than helping the game.

Back to the changes that will take effect. Teams like the Scots and the Netherlands could face three qualifying tournaments to reach the main group stage of the World Cup.

“The changes risk weakening the integrity and credibility of international cricket and only highlights the importance of strong governance, transparent decision-making and effective engagement with members,” the joint statement said. “Changing those structures at short notice creates significant uncertainty, disrupts planning and places additional operational and financial pressure on organizations that are already operating with limited resources.”

CRICKET CANADA WINS

After haggling for some two years, Cricket Canada has finally won its case against Bombay Sports, the company that ran the highly successful GT20 Canada in Brampton. The arbitrator dismissed Bombay Sports’ claim in its entirety and upheld Cricket Canada’s counterclaim.

The award requires the Indian company to pay Cricket Canada $392,323.62 plus interest and also return all GT20 Canada intellectual property and related materials.

A new league that was to have replaced the GT20 this year has been bogged down with several issues and likely won’t return until next year.
