Marrying the grandson of Grace Kelly and becoming part of Monaco's royal family would be the defining wealth event in almost anyone's life. For Tatiana Santo Domingo, it may not even crack the top five.

Long before Tatiana married Andrea Casiraghi, the eldest son of Princess Caroline of Monaco, she was already an heir to one of the great business fortunes of Latin America. Her grandfather, Julio Mario Santo Domingo, built a sprawling Colombian empire centered around beer and ultimately became one of the richest people on the planet. By the time he died in 2011, Forbes estimated his fortune at roughly $8.5 billion.

And beer was just the beginning.

The foundation of the Santo Domingo fortune was Bavaria, the Colombian brewing giant that grew into one of the dominant beer companies in Latin America. Julio Mario Santo Domingo spent decades expanding his family's business interests, which at various points extended into media, airlines, telecommunications, petrochemicals, and other industries. But Bavaria was the crown jewel.

In 2005, the family made the deal that transformed an enormous Colombian fortune into a truly global one. SABMiller agreed to acquire Bavaria in a transaction that valued the Latin American brewer at billions of dollars. Instead of simply cashing out, the Santo Domingo family exchanged control of Bavaria for roughly 15% of SABMiller, making them one of the largest shareholders in one of the biggest beer companies in the world.

By the time Julio Mario died six years later, Forbes valued his fortune at approximately $8.5 billion, with most of that wealth tied to his SABMiller stake. Tatiana was one of his heirs, and Forbes later reported that she inherited one-sixth of her grandfather's fortune. In 2016, the publication estimated Tatiana's personal net worth at $2.4 billion.

But the family fortune wasn't done evolving.

In 2016, Anheuser-Busch InBev completed its enormous takeover of SABMiller in a transaction valued at more than $100 billion. Once again, the Santo Domingo family didn't simply disappear with a pile of cash. The transaction converted part of its SABMiller wealth into an ownership interest in the combined brewing giant.

Today, the family's investments are held through a Luxembourg-based holding company with interests extending well beyond beer. Forbes reports that the Santo Domingo portfolio includes stakes in Anheuser-Busch InBev, Keurig Dr Pepper, and Kraft Heinz, along with privately held Colombian companies involved in movie theaters, supermarkets, and gas distribution. The family even owns an interest in Château Pétrus, the legendary Bordeaux estate that produces some of the most expensive wine in the world.

Tatiana owns roughly 5% of this family holding company. Her brother, Julio Mario Santo Domingo III, owns a similar stake, while their mother, Vera Rechulski Santo Domingo, controls about 11%. The exact value of Tatiana's personal fortune today is therefore more complicated than simply taking her grandfather's old fortune and dividing it among his descendants. But the larger point is unmistakable: Tatiana Santo Domingo did not need Monaco to become extremely wealthy.

Tatiana's other great dynasty entered her life through Andrea Casiraghi. Andrea is the eldest son of Princess Caroline and her late husband Stefano Casiraghi. More famously, he is the grandson of Grace Kelly, the Hollywood superstar who gave up acting to marry Prince Rainier III and become Princess of Monaco.

Tatiana and Andrea moved in overlapping European social circles for years before becoming a couple. They announced their engagement in 2012 and welcomed their first child, Alexandre "Sasha" Casiraghi, in March 2013. Five months later, they married in Monaco.

For a wedding joining a billionaire heiress to the grandson of Grace Kelly, the civil ceremony was surprisingly bohemian. Tatiana wore a Missoni gown and flowers in her hair rather than a tiara. Around 400 guests gathered for a celebration at the Prince's Palace, including Monaco's Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene. The festivities included lunch by the palace pool followed by an evening party at the Hotel de Paris.

A second, more formal religious ceremony followed in Gstaad, Switzerland, in February 2014. Tatiana and Andrea eventually had two more children, India and Maximilian. Through her marriage, Tatiana became connected to one of Europe's most recognizable royal families. Her siblings-in-law include Charlotte Casiraghi and Pierre Casiraghi.

But unlike the stereotypical story of a commoner marrying into extraordinary wealth, Tatiana arrived with a billionaire dynasty of her own.

Tatiana has also built a business separate from both family fortunes. In 2011, she and her friend Dana Alikhani launched Muzungu Sisters, an ethical fashion and lifestyle brand centered on traditional craftsmanship. Instead of mass-producing clothing in conventional factories, Muzungu Sisters works with artisan communities around the world to produce embroidered dresses, jewelry, accessories, and other handmade goods.

The company says it now supports and works with more than 40 artisan communities. For Tatiana, the business fits naturally with a life spent around fashion. Her social circle has included designers and fashion-family heirs such as Margherita Missoni, while her relative Lauren Santo Domingo co-founded luxury fashion retailer Moda Operandi. Muzungu Sisters, however, has survived for well over a decade as more than an heiress's side project.

The funny thing about Tatiana's life today is that, despite the billions, royal connections, and glamorous names, she has deliberately moved away from the center of the action. Tatiana and Andrea lived in London for more than a decade before relocating with their three children to Saanen, Switzerland, near Gstaad.

It's difficult to describe Gstaad as roughing it. The Swiss resort has long been a playground for billionaires, celebrities, and European aristocracy. But Saanen itself offers the family something Monaco and London cannot: relative anonymity. Tatiana spends much of her time with her children and working on Muzungu Sisters. The family skis, hikes, and entertains at home while periodically returning to Monaco for major family events such as the Rose Ball, National Day, and the Monaco Grand Prix.

It's a considerably quieter existence than the phrase "billionaire beer heiress married into Monaco royalty" might suggest. And that's ultimately what makes Tatiana Santo Domingo's story so unusual. She is tied by marriage to the Grimaldis, one of Europe's most famous royal families. Her husband is Grace Kelly's grandson. Her children are in the line of succession to the Monegasque throne.

But Tatiana didn't exactly marry up. She married sideways—from one of the world's great billionaire business dynasties into one of Europe's most famous royal families.
