I like to sit on the steps of our state Capitol some days and look at the skyline of my city. Great big oaks and fragrant flowers frame a statue of pioneers, who gaze ahead at Des Moines’ downtown. A hundred years ago or so, President Theodore Roosevelt stood here and gave one of his fist-pumping speeches.
