Free the knee? The great debate over shorts at work is taking over offices

Traditionally, shorts have been considered a major fashion faux pas at work, but some people are trying their hardest to make exposed knees happen.
As summers have progressively grown hotter, some companies have begun to loosen their strict dress codes and permit shorter hemlines. But the age-old style debate has produced some strong feelings on both sides of the spectrum.
Joe Fryer took his assignment very seriously.
Bloomberg conducted a poll of clients in the business world and found that only 45% of them find it appropriate to wear shorts at work. Critics called the look “unprofessional.” One person drew a pretty sharp line in the sand, saying, “AI is taking all our humanity, all we have left is pants.”
But many who support the idea of wearing shorts to work say it’s more comfortable in the summer and can save on air conditioning.
Several designers at Milan Fashion Week, including Ralph Lauren and Thom Browne, recently paired shorts with dressier items. Designer Rick Owens is also selling knee-length shorts that are being marketed as “work shorts.”
New York Magazine’s senior men’s style editor Samuel Hine told NBC News correspondent Joe Fryer he’s not a big fan of the trend.
“Your colleagues don’t necessarily want to see your hairy legs,” he said.
That’s something workers in Japan are experiencing firsthand after the Tokyo government began allowing shorts at work. But he New York Times reported that some people now say they’re experiencing “leg-hair harassment.”
Social media users appear divided on the couture controversy. One Instagram user urged his followers to “normalize business shorts,” especially for professionals who live and work in cities where the average temperature is above 90 degrees.
In a TikTok video, another social media user reassured her followers that trouser shorts are appropriate in the workplace and demonstrated her go-to outfit, saying, “Do not be afraid to wear shorts to the office.”
Still, not everyone was convinced. One TikTok user strongly advised her followers against following the rising trend, saying, “Don’t wear shorts to work. It’s not business casual.”
Another TikTok user took a hard stance, saying, “Shorts are never appropriate for work.”
The debate over shorts in the workplace is nothing new. For decades, shorts were considered taboo in the office. Slowly but surely, however, more voices have inserted themselves into the mix to extol the benefits of wearing shorts at work. Chris Vogtherr’s 2016 Ted Talk went viral as he stated that he wanted to “free the knee.”
In 2023, Jenna Bush Hager weighed in on the debate on TODAY with Hoda and Jenna and said “fancier shorts” might be appropriate in the office.
“I think it depends on the material, right?” she said at the time.
While reporting on the trend, Fryer showed some leg live on TODAY. After, the co-hosts debated the pros and cons of wearing shorts to the office.
“It depends on the job,” Willie Geist said.
“Our crew, they wear shorts, but they’re outside. They’re doing stuff. They come back in and forth. Postal workers are outside,” Al Roker added.
Fryer said wearing shorts for the segment was “kind of refreshing.”
“I think this is it. This is my new look,” he joked.
“The AC is jacked up so high in most offices, I feel like you don’t really need to use the excuse that you’re hot,” Dylan Dreyer said.
“If you’re hot, just wear a kilt,” Al added.
“Then you really get a breeze!” Dylan said.
In the end, the TODAY team decided they prefer pants over shorts in the office.
“Pants for Joe!” Al declared.
“Get this man some slacks,” Willie said.
