VIJAYAWADA

Andhra Pradesh-Power Generation Corporation Limited (AP-Genco) Managing Director S. Nagalakshmi called upon officials, engineers, employees and staff of the power utilities to work collectively with dedication to further strengthen the State’s power sector and said providing daytime power supply to around 22.50 lakh agricultural consumers, ensuring uninterrupted supply to domestic, industrial and commercial consumers, was the government’s top priority.

Peak power demand

Participating as the chief guest in the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Vidyut Soudha in Vijayawada on Saturday, Ms. Nagalakshmi said as the power demand was rising rapidly, the government took various steps to augment generation capacity and sustain power supply in the years ahead, while pointing out that the State recorded a peak power demand of 15,016 MW earlier this year on May 21, along with peak daily energy consumption of 288.92 million units.

Power generation increased from 77,640.55 Million Units (MU) in 2024-25 to 79,684.96 MU in 2025-26, while generation in the current financial year stood at 15,970.11 MU (till June). AP-Genco achieved a record generation of 6,009 MW earlier this year, on January 3, supported by improved coal supply and quality, timely financial support and operational efficiency.

To meet future energy requirements, AP-Genco has taken up a 15,680 MW capacity expansion programme, wherein the Lower Sileru expansion, Polavaram hydropower project and Upper Sileru Pumped Storage Project would play an important role.

Highlighting AP-Transco’s performance, Ms. Nagalakshmi said continuous digitalisation, modern monitoring systems and predictive maintenance measures resulted in a significant improvement in the efficiency of the transmission network. These sustained efforts helped bring down the transmission technical losses to 2.6% in 2025-26.

The government accorded high priority to solar, wind, pumped storage and battery energy storage projects, she said, adding that as of June 2026, renewable energy projects with a cumulative capacity of 112.45 Gigawatts had been allocated in the State.
