The Boston Bruins are adding a recent second-round pick to their organization. According to a team announcement, the AHL’s Providence Bruins, AHL affiliate of the Bruins, have signed forward Cross Hanas to a one-year AHL deal for the 2026-27 season. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Hanas, 24, was drafted with the 55th overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He was playing for the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks at the time, finishing with 22 goals and 49 points in 60 games with a +20 rating. Although he played in a few games for the Winterhawks the following season, he primarily spent it with the USHL’s Lincoln Stars, finishing with three goals and 16 points in 27 games, a -11 rating, and 99 PIMs.

After another season in Portland in which he scored 26 goals and 86 points in 63 games with a +31 rating, Hanas made the jump to professional hockey. He had a decent rookie campaign with the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, registering nine goals and 17 points in 30 games with a -12 rating.

Unfortunately, over the next two years, Hanas didn’t take any meaningful steps forward. Throughout the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns, Hanas scored 17 goals and 33 points in 116 games, falling well short of his draft status.

The back-to-back disappointing seasons led the Red Wings to non-tender Hanas last summer, allowing him to sign with any team. He returned to where he was born, signing a one-year deal with the AHL’s Texas Stars, affiliate of the Dallas Stars. In his strongest season so far, Hanas finished with 15 goals and 38 points in 56 games with a +6 rating. Additionally, he tallied two assists in six postseason contests.
