Mark Sanford, former South Carolina governor and current U.S. Senate candidate, at a Statehouse news conference, 22 years after his original pig protest made national headlines. In 2004, as governor, Sanford carried two squealing piglets named Pork and Barrel onto the Statehouse carpet to protest legislators overriding more than 100 of his budget vetoes in less than two hours. The piglets defecated on the carpet and infuriated lawmakers. This week he returned with two small piglets named Debt and Deficit and a 400-pound Berkshire hog representing federal spending that was too large to cage and arrived in a trailer. His pig math: if Pork and Barrel had survived 22 years, they could have produced 880 piglets through normal reproduction, the equivalent, he said, of compounded interest on the national debt.
