Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated CG Semi's Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking the commissioning of India's third semiconductor manufacturing plant and a key milestone in the country's efforts to build a domestic chip ecosystem.
The facility is expected to boost India's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, strengthen the electronics supply chain and reduce dependence on imported chips as the government pushes to position the country as a global semiconductor hub.
Speaking at the inauguration, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said the facility would manufacture chips for the automotive and industrial sectors while also positioning India as an exporter of semiconductor products to advanced markets.
"The chips manufactured at this plant will be used in cars, scooters and various industrial applications. Most significantly, chips made in India at this facility will be exported to Japan, America and Europe. Indian technology will earn global acclaim," Vaishnaw said.
Calling the inauguration a landmark for India's semiconductor ambitions, the minister credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's push to develop a domestic chip ecosystem. "This was once considered impossible, but it has become a reality thanks to the bold resolve of our leadership—a monumental commitment to establish a semiconductor industry in India, which has now come to fruition," he said.
