Every parent has been there. Your kid is in their room — door closed, AirPods in — while you stand in another part of the house, calling them for dinner or asking them if they’re (finally) ready to leave the house. It’s more than a little frustrating, and it can truly seem like once they’ve disappeared into the depths of their bedrooms, you lose all communication entirely.

Enter Macey Chell, who recently shared to TikTok the hack she and her husband use to stay in touch with their kids even when the bedroom door is closed. In the video clip, which has more than four million views, Chell opens her kitchen cabinet, saying, “My husband put in these little doorbell things in the kids’ rooms, so that way if we need them and they’re upstairs in their rooms or they need to get up, we just push it.”

The “little doorbell things” in question appear to be adhesive doorbells designed for self-installation: The buttons to “ring” the doorbells are labeled with each kids’ initials on the inside of the cabinet, and the ringing unit itself is in the corresponding kids’ room. A genius idea that’s sure to get any kid’s attention.

In fact, when Chell presses the button with the letter “G” on it, it’s easy to hear a loud-and-clear doorbell ringing in her son’s room upstairs. When Chell heads to the staircase to see if her son heard the ringing, he’s there at the top of the stairs, waiting to see what she needs. “I just wanna make sure you’re awake,” she says to him. And, obviously, he is.

It’s a brilliant and hilarious solution, and one that requires no shouting on Mom or Dad’s part. Of course, parents in the comments are expressing their approval.

“That’s actually so smart for the adults that grew up with lots of yelling around the house,” one commenter said. “Changing the tone for the new gen — I love to see it.”

“Once again,” said another, “I’m so glad I parent in the age of TikTok.”

Other commenters were quick to share their own hacks for getting kids’ attention around the house. “We use Alexa,” one said. “‘Alexa, make an announcement’ and I can send it directly to a specific Alexa … I do it when I’m not home, too, from my phone.”

“I grew up with my parents using a broom handle,” said another, “knocking on the ceiling to let me and my brothers know to come down.”

Still others were dubious of this method of summoning kids from their bedrooms. “I prefer screaming across the house at my kids,” joked one parent. “It builds character.”

“I would unplug it,” said another.

We have to admit, we think this family’s doorbell method is a pretty smart way to solve a common communication problem. And, since these types of doorbells seem to cost around $10 each at Amazon, it’s a pretty affordable parenting hack, too.
